I remember skipping every recess. We called this "French skipping" and we used a long piece of sewing elastic tied together. There were a variety of moves from jumping to stepping, beginning at the ankle then moving up to the knee, to hip, to waist, to under the armpits, and neck. As the elastic was raised higher, you were allowed to use your pinky finger to pull down the elastic. If you missed, it was another player's turn.

Chinese jump rope! Loved this as a kid. If I didn't have a third kid I'd use the legs of a chair!
Chinese Jumprope. 'In, out, side by side, on, in, out'. Can't believe I remembered that.

Chinese Jump Rope - My favorite game in 3rd grade next to Jacks! Must accomplish specific series of moves without making an error. It has been popular for many years, certainly since the 1960s, in the United States. In New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain children refer to the game as "Elastics".
