The Lacock Cup. Plain and gilded silver, England, 15th century.The Lacock Cup. Formed of nearly 1kg of silver, this drinking cup topped with a sweeping lid was made in England in the mid-15th century and is a rare example of pre-Reformation secular silver. The survival rate for this type of object is extremely low. Fewer than 300 pieces of English silver have survived from before 1520. Why this low rate of survival? As tastes changed, the silver was melted down and refashioned.
