About
River of Music the new album from “musical marvels” the Kanneh-Masons (The Guardian) reunites all seven siblings – Isata, Braimah, Sheku, Konya, Jeneba, Aminata and Mariatu – following the success of Carnival (2020). The album features new arrangements of classical works and folk songs, with the centrepiece being Schubert’s Trout Quintet – a beloved family favourite the siblings grew up listening to together. Recorded in Abbey Road Studios in summer 2024, River of Music shares how the Kanneh-Masons’ love of music has been passed on through generations. From their Welsh grandmother following love across the sea to Sierra Leone, to their Antiguan grandad passing on his own dashed hopes of a musical career, this album celebrates the musical threads of the Kanneh-Mason family.
“This is a story about our family and the sources of our music. Music runs like a river through the generations, and our passion for listening and playing music comes from our grandparents, and from their stories, flowing from the places and dreams they passed on…”

Presto Recording of the Week12th September 2025
November 2025
[TheTrout Quintet] This receives a terrifically spirited performance, especially in the mischievous Scherzo...Whether or not the theme always quite holds up, River of Music proves an enjoyable album from this remarkable family.
October 2025
All in all, this is an utterly charming performance [of The Trout] that balances youthful vigour with thoughtful lyricism.
12th September 2025
Whilst there is nothing here to challenge the top recordings of the better-known pieces, River of Music captures a moment in the course of the Kanneh-Mason river very successfully and, most importantly, has the power to invite new listeners into the joys of classical music. It also leaves me listening out for any future composing activity by Isata, which has the potential to bring additional depths to the family story.
11th September 2025
Nothing is mawkish or over milked, yet everything feels a little like a final encore, sending us out misty-eyed.
10th September 2025
The family’s lopsided instrumental resources (three violinists, two cellists, two pianists) limit the opportunities for a group attack: Schubert’s Trout piano quintet, the crowning item, could only be mounted with reinforcements. But a family feeling still persists in this fresh, engaging performance. It equally threads through many smaller items, whether folksy effusions (Deep River and Welsh hymns) or sweetmeats by Handel or Elgar.
