After experiencing a traumatic or stressful event, you may find that you feel different: perhaps you move between feeling overwhelmed by fear, shame, anger, or sadness, to numbing out; maybe your world has gotten smaller as you avoid doing things you used to love; or you may have noticed your thoughts about yourself, the world, and other people start to change such that control, trust, and safety have become difficult themes for you. Additionally, maybe you notice your sleep has worsened, making everything harder. Trauma and stress take a toll on all aspects of your life, but you don't have to battle it alone.

I've worked for decades in accredited sleep disorders centers and now offer treatment via a secure tele-video conferencing platform.

Anxiety, shame, and chronic guilt; you don’t know how to relax, and you probably don’t sleep very well. The perfectionism is crippling, and you're exhausted. Maybe you're a people-pleaser with terrible boundaries, or a former “gifted and talented” kid, or a child of immigrants always reaching for "good enough." Your inner critic is loud. Anxious perfectionism may also show up as body tension and panic attacks; procrastination and indecision; an overwhelming to-do list; and difficulty in relationships. Perfectionists don't already do things perfectly—they feel like they HAVE to do better, but they’re ALWAYS falling short.

Evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT), and others can provide substantial relief in a short time – even for those who have been struggling for years or decades – and can be completed while gently reducing reliance on sleep aids.
Sleep problems require specialized treatment. A board-certified sleep psychologist, I work with adults, teens, kids, and families to improve sleep naturally. I help those who struggle to turn off their minds at night, are wide awake at odd hours, or feel unrefreshed in the morning. Many are sleepy all day but can't drift off at bedtime. I help those with distressing nightmares or vivid dreams and those who behave unusually while sleeping. Many are taking a variety of medications, substances, or supplements that aren't working as well, and I help these individuals sleep better and reduce reliance on sleep aids if that is their goal.

My specialties are in Insomnia and Sleep disorders, PTSD and acute trauma, and gastrointestinal health.
You may be emotionally, physically, or spiritually in a space in your life that you might describe as challenging, confusing, and/or uncontrollable. There might be different struggles, that somehow reflect a similar underlying process. Perhaps, one that involves fear, avoidance, escaping, 'trying so hard', and eventually feeling helpless. Though our struggles may differ on the exterior, the underlying process is what often reflects our perspectives and emotional health. Addressing vs resisting our challenges can deepen our confidence in our ability to work through them. Thus, creating the space for a calm and grounded experience.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
