Riding the wave of mid-'90s interest in all things Seattle, Pete Droge landed a modern rock hit with "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)" from his debut Necktie Second.  He also had a cameo in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous, opened a tour for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, released an album with Matthew Sweet and Shawn Mullins as The Thorns, and even scored work writing commercial jingles. More recently he's been self-releasing albums on his Puzzle Tree label, with his wife Elaine Summers producing.

On Fade Away Blue, Droge digs into his experience tracking down his birth mother.  Although she died months before he began his search, his eventual reunion with other blood relatives also proved inspirational.  He recounts on "Song for Barbara Ann," "I've got your hazel eyes/ And a streak that is blue/ They say it's uncanny/ How much I remind them of you." Clearly moved by his search, he concludes, "And all I can do is keep singing for you/ Pining for someone who I never knew/ Hard to believe it was over before it began/ I just wasn't part of your plan/Barbara Ann." Droge's ability to write melodic hooks buoys this intimacy.

Droge picks up the groove on "Fading Fast," which taps into both the challenges and exhilarations of being on the road, "My manager says that my single's been dropped/ And my sales are beginning to stall/ They want me to do more interviews/ I say, 'Please, my voice is shot/ I'm trying to save it for the show tonight/ Cuz that's the only thrill I got.'"

Supporting Droge throughout is a talented group of players, including drummer Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Jeff Parker ETA IVtet), pianist Lee Pardini (Dawes, Chris Stapleton) and the always great Greg Leisz (Beck, Bill Frisell) on pedal steel.  © Robert Baird/Qobuz
