In 2013 when he released 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, we wondered if this was perhaps the next Mike Skinner (a.k.a. The Streets), taking on the role as a flag bearer for a whole generation. Archy Marshall, better known by the pseudonym King Krule was ONLY 19 years old and managed to capture the gripping voice of young Londoners much like his hero Mike Skinner had done a decade ago… 4 years later, his voice is profound and sad with an surprisingly baritone quality. His songs are packed with plenty of disillusionment and disorientation, always with the same crushing effect. This ‘blue wave’ invented by King Krule remains fascinating. It’s a unique mishmash that the young redhead has defines as mixing "the aggressive side of post-punk with no-wave as well as softer genres like blues and jazz" and this time round it’s even more throaty. Marshall has consistently strengthened his skills since his beginnings and on The Ooz he dares to include unexpected punctuations (like the jazz brass section that occasionally bursts through the melancholy) that make his second album even more obscure than the first! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
