Respect yacht rock! The insanely catchy genre that's made a virtue of accessibility and is basically a replay of 1970s Top 40 radio evokes more rolled eyes than honest praise. Yet singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen, who performs under the stage name Bahamas, not only respects this style of soft rock (think Eric Carmen, Air Supply and Kenny Loggins), he proves to be damn good at it. Sung in a near whisper, the gently funky "I'm Still" near the middle of Bootcut is Jurvanen at his consummate yacht rock best. With flute-like synths quavering away in the background of "I'm Still," Jurvanen, who may be even more skilled at words than he is at melodies, sketches out a peculiarly resonant portrait: "He makes his own facts/ He don't sign contracts/ He don't pay back tax/ He just do what he do." Even though can't resist the lure of writing soft '70s-esque radio hits like "Into the Unknown," this is at times the singer-songwriter's "Nashville record."
The Juno Award-winning Ontario native surrounds himself with A-team talent including guitarist Vince Gill, pedal steel player Russ Pahl and Mickey Raphael, Willie Nelson's longtime harmonica player. While it's no surprise that those musicians acquit themselves well, the reality is no matter how much Jurvanen says he respects the Nashville zeitgeist, his writing strengths and interests don't quite fit. "Sports Car," a rearranged older tune, has ghostly female backing vocals and plays it straight with his trademark smooth delivery despite bizarre lyrics: "Son, your daddy ain't around/ He left town when he found/ Out you weren't a sports car." Jurvanen does hit a vaguely country boogie Dire Straits groove in "Gone Girl Gone" where an electric guitar buzzes behind lines like, "Meeting her was just dumb luck/ I was living in my pickup truck/ She opened up like an oyster shucked/ Gone girl, gone." Recorded by a veritable heard of engineers including Joe Trentacosti, Phil Hotz, Robbie Lackritz, Dan Knobler, and Joshua Van Tassel, the sound is focused on Jurvanen's voice—though at times instrumental solos are pushed forward in the mix with a shocking aggressiveness.
