Since his début album which came out 2015, Aaron Livingston a.k.a Son Little has blurred the lines between genres. First we thought he was all about soul. Then folk. A little later, we were questioning if his music was electro. And then came the rock. Blues too… In short, we navigated our way through the album without really understanding what was going on. Mostly because there’s so much going on. It’s unusual. It’s vibrant. It’s spellbinding. The musical material on this disc was just as beautiful and bewildering as the tastes of the artist in question, who cited that his début album was influenced (somewhat loosely) by Ram by Paul McCartney, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City by Kendrick Lamar, Shields by Grizzly Bear and Ritual Union by Little Dragon! Two years later, New Magic equally resembles a patchwork of genres though this time seemed to concentrate on the soul side of its author. A musical alchemist, Son Little juggles with the different forms of the American R&B of the past (between Billy Paul and the early days of Marvin Gaye) without forgetting to anchor his prose in his time.
