Chronique : Press Play - Diddy

Diddy est une force presque absolue dans le monde du hip-hop, et Press Play est naturellement devenu un énorme succès commercial. Ses morceaux hautement basés sur les samples ont toujours reposé sur des accroches radiogéniques plutôt que sur une véritable innovation sonique, et c’est finalement là qu’il s’impose, en recrutant les meilleurs producteurs en la matière du moment. Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, will.i.am et Just Blaze, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns, offrent à cet album une nuance résolument contemporaine en contribuant à de sublimes morceaux particulièrement denses et truffés d’effets de superposition. Il y invite par ailleurs tout le gratin du rap et de la chanson : Nas, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx et bien d’autres. L’album offre une écoute scintillante et glamour, révélant l’authentique talent de Combs qui n’est pas tant de faire l’étal de ses propres capacités que de créer des événements hip-hop absolument énormes.
