Ce vaste opéra rock sur un garçon aveugle, sourd et muet qui a lancé le groupe vers la superstaritude internationale a été écrit presque entièrement par Pete Townshend. Salué comme une révélation à sa sortie, son aura a quelque peu diminué au cours des décennies suivantes à cause du côté parfois prétentieux du concept et du manque de substance de certaines chansons dont la seule justification est de faire avancer une intrigue un peu légère. Il n’empêche que ce double album contient d’excellentes chansons, notamment "I'm Free" et "Pinball Wizard". Malgré la complexité du projet, Townshend et The Who n’ont aucunement sacrifié les mélodies pop solides, les harmonies et l’instrumentation vigoureuse, instillant dans cette œuvre une grâce puissante.
