Out of all the game-changing albums that have transformed metal into a genre that’s more accessible than ever, Slipknot’s debut takes the lion’s share.
It’s June 1999. The 20th century is coming to an end, and hard rock more or less dominates the scene. Meanwhile, your dad’s favorite heavy metal groups are trying to get a second wind, nu metal is putting a new spin on the genre, and thrash and death are pushing the limits of speed and violence. The scene is set for a UFO to land and blow everyone’s mind, which comes in the form of a collective of nine musicians from Des Moines, Iowa, and one totally insane album. Slipknot mixed the fury of thrash with the groove of nu metal, including samples, scratches, and percussion (for the most part, baseball bats whacked against empty oil barrels). The result is fresh, unique, violent, and, strangely enough, more accessible than most other metal albums despite its relentlessly ultra-violent side. The group’s image also contributed to its impact and success: each of its members were masked, dressed alike, and had numbers instead of names. “(Sic)” and “Eyeless” ravage with their pounding drums before “Wait and Bleed” brings in a bit more melody (thanks in large part to Corey Taylor, who seems comfortable singing in just about every register) and the unsettling atmosphere of “Purity” makes us feel like we’re on the set of a horror movie. Although the album’s second half is a bit less consistent, Slipknot is still a bomb that can’t help but raze everything in its path, instantly turning the group into iconoclastic metal legends with an ever-growing audience. After the 10th Anniversary edition, which contained 25 tracks and a DVD, this 25th Anniversary edition contains multiple versions of the album, including the original, whose 32 tracks are paired with demos and previously unreleased remixes by the greatest names in metal production, such as Terry Date, Jay Baumgardner, and Ulrich Wild, making this classic record feel brand-new. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz

Out of all the game-changing albums that have transformed metal into a genre that’s more accessible than ever, Slipknot’s debut takes the lion’s share.
It’s June 1999. The 20th century is coming to an end, and hard rock more or less dominates the scene. Meanwhile, your dad’s favorite heavy metal groups are trying to get a second wind, nu metal is putting a new spin on the genre, and thrash and death are pushing the limits of speed and violence. The scene is set for a UFO to land and blow everyone’s mind, which comes in the form of a collective of nine musicians from Des Moines, Iowa, and one totally insane album. Slipknot mixed the fury of thrash with the groove of nu metal, including samples, scratches, and percussion (for the most part, baseball bats whacked against empty oil barrels). The result is fresh, unique, violent, and, strangely enough, more accessible than most other metal albums despite its relentlessly ultra-violent side. The group’s image also contributed to its impact and success: each of its members were masked, dressed alike, and had numbers instead of names. “(Sic)” and “Eyeless” ravage with their pounding drums before “Wait and Bleed” brings in a bit more melody (thanks in large part to Corey Taylor, who seems comfortable singing in just about every register) and the unsettling atmosphere of “Purity” makes us feel like we’re on the set of a horror movie. Although the album’s second half is a bit less consistent, Slipknot is still a bomb that can’t help but raze everything in its path, instantly turning the group into iconoclastic metal legends with an ever-growing audience. After the 10th Anniversary edition, which contained 25 tracks and a DVD, this 25th Anniversary edition contains multiple versions of the album, including the original, whose 32 tracks are paired with demos and previously unreleased remixes by the greatest names in metal production, such as Terry Date, Jay Baumgardner, and Ulrich Wild, making this classic record feel brand-new. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz
