Etienne de Crécy has set out to write an ode to taking things slow on his new album Warm Up, named after the first nightclub slot where DJs usually play at slower BPMs. When Covid hit in 2020, he didn’t feel like producing techno anymore, thinking ‘what’s the point if no one’s dancing?’ Instead, he found himself in the mood to compose tracks for listening to at home or on the radio, at slower tempos like the ones he used in the 90s on trip hop tracks for his group Motorbass, a duo made up of him and Zdar. Yet this album isn’t only a return to the DJ’s roots - it also owes itself to his age. At 56 years old, he claims to be “over” the wave of 150 BPM techno that swept through clubs right after Covid, inciting a rapid turnover of generations behind the turntables.

Etienne de Crécy gave himself the extra challenge of bringing in a guest artist to sing on each track, which explains the four years of production time. A figurehead of the French Tour movement, he was able to crack open his address book full of major names to bring on board. First up are two Englishmen, Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip on the disco pop track “World Away” and Damon Albarn of Blur on the elegant “Rising Soul.” These tracks remind us of just how good De Crécy is at making feel-good hits like the heady French pop song “Karma,” featuring vocals by Olivia Merilahti of The Dø, the cosmic ballad “Small Screen” with Sarah Midori Perry of Zero Zero Bonito, and “Monte Carlo,” featuring the multitalented Chicago rapper Frank Leone, whose 90s trip hop vibe is always a pleasure to hear. This is an album full of finesse, giving it a truly vintage De Crécy feel! © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
