Whilst many of their peers have chosen to go in different artistic directions over the past few decades, if not throw in the towel altogether, the members of the legendary band Testament have continued to dish out their devastatingly powerful thrash, holding nothing back. Five years after Titans of Creation, the group has nailed it yet again, but they’re not just serving up the same exact recipe on autopilot. The ‘New Testament’ go on a mad dash that’s old-school while still feeling fresh, thanks to their new recruit on drums Chris Dovas, who does a spectacular job following in the footsteps of Dave Lombardo and Gene Hoglan. With his help, the sparks fly from the very start, with “For The Love of Pain” and “Infanticide A.I.” setting the tone. Shots are fired, just like the good old days, but without sounding dated, tackling contemporary topics head-on.

In spite of its aggressive side, Para Bellum is full of pleasant surprises that add variety to the listening experience. “Meant to Be,” a ballad lasting over seven minutes, harks back to the “Return to Serenity” era, while “Witch Hunt” keeps you guessing with its freewheeling beginning and an ending split between choirs, an incredible guitar solo, and groove-filled breaks. What might have otherwise seemed like the group randomly trying on different hats before finding the one that fit, is in fact a brilliantly coherent, solid album from the very start. Such success largely owes itself to musicians who use their skills to evolve, but without ever losing sight of their roots. Without a doubt, Testament are living legends, their rage still very much intact after all these years. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz
