Ópera de rock desarrollada entorno a un niño sordomudo y ciego que lanzó al grupo al estrellato internacional, compuesta casi en su totalidad por Pete Townshend. Aclamado desde el momento del lanzamiento por su innovación, su posición con respecto a la crítica ha ido empeorando en cierta medida en las décadas posteriores debido a las pretensiones esporádicas del concepto y dada la naturaleza insustancial de algunas de las canciones que funcionaron como algo más que dispositivos para avanzar en un argumento más bien superficial. No obstante, el álbum doble cuenta con numerosas magníficas canciones, entre las que se incluyen "I'm Free" y "Pinball Wizard". A pesar de la complejidad del proyecto, Townshend y The Who nunca perdieron de vista las sólidas melodías pop, armonías e instrumentación contundente, empapando el material con una potente y adecuada gracia.
