Under the mentorship of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Bruce Springsteen, North American guitarist and composer Bryce Dessner takes flight in a minimalist style unique to his country, with no other stylistic concern than to express himself to the widest audience. He draws from multiple inspirations, both from European traditions and popular music from all five continents. With the spread of travel, the advent of new media, and social media, the world has gradually become more globalized. Artists are always quick to capture the spirit of the times, and a highly creative musical melting pot has developed as musicians continue to embrace new influences. Solos presents a retrospective collection of diverse instrumental works composed by Dessner in recent years. The album features compositions inspired by classical music and original soundtracks, performed by cellist Anastasia Kobekina, violinist Pekka Kuusisto, pianist Katia Labèque, harpist Lavinia Meijer, violist Nadia Sirota, percussionist Colin Currie, and Bryce Dessner himself on guitar. “I have always loved instrumental music,” he says, “particularly the lute and cello suites by Bach and the lute fantasias of the Renaissance by John Dowland, which I myself play on the classical guitar. These pieces are often written like poems, where the musical language itself dictates the form and development of the piece, and they often provide me with an opportunity to explore more deeply my relationship with the instruments for which they are composed.
