When Joni Mitchell was finally coerced by her label into releasing a greatest hits compilation (1996's Hits), she did so only under the condition that she could also release a companion album of her favorite tracks that didn't receive such wide acclaim. That album, Misses, was released on the same day and, in addition to acting as a sort of alternate-universe representation of Mitchell's best work, it also gave the world a chance to get a glimpse at how she views her own creative output. This is, after all, the same person who—whenever possible—took the opportunity to call out the craven lack of imagination of the folks that run the music business ("You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio," "Free Man in Paris," "Shiny Toys"), so it's unsurprising that she and those very same suits don't see eye to eye on how best to curate and contextualize her work.

Thus it is that Joni's Jazz, a four-disc compilation of "recordings chosen by Mitchell that reflect jazz's profound influence on her music" is not just a collection of material that's occasionally "jazzy," but also the career-encompassing "Joni box set" fans have been waiting years for. While the recent run of Joni Mitchell Archives releases have been illuminating in their extensive documentation of her creative evolution, they have been, by definition, comprehensive and chronological in nature. The selective and nearly narrative approach of Joni's Jazz is something else altogether, representing the way that Mitchell herself—rather than her critics or her colleagues—wants to define her music. (It also, unlike any of the previous Archives sets, includes multiple tracks from her early '80s run on Geffen Records, which are available to download, but not to stream.) That the set starts off with "Blue" and includes a handful of other tracks like "Marcie" that hew much more closely to her folk-singer origins gives the listener plenty of indication that Mitchell's version of "jazz" has much less to do with fitting into the bebop lineage than it does with making highly individualized music that's informed by the improvisational freedom and instrumental adventurousness of the genre.

To be sure, there are plenty of jazz chops to be found here. Mitchell's most frequent partners-in-jazz Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, and, yes, Charles Mingus are present throughout, as well as a raft of other talented players like Brian Blade, Kenny Wheeler, Larry Klein, and Mark Isham who may not be household names, but each introduced unique vectors of the jazz tradition to Mitchell's work.

There is even a substantial clutch of jazz standards that are sung by Mitchell: "Twisted," "Stormy Weather," "You're My Thrill," "The Man I Love," and a live version of "Summertime" from the 2023 Newport Folk Festival. Many of these hail from 1999's Both Sides Now, the most explicitly jazz-y album in Mitchell's discography. But even though she's in smoky-club-singer mode, the iconoclastic musical structures and instrumental approaches she used kept Both Sides from becoming the sort of dreaded "see, I can sing jazz, too" project many artists feel obligated to make. That weirdness is what makes Mitchell's relationship to jazz—and this compilation—so interesting. (The set could have been called Weird Joni, but that would have been likely to sell far fewer copies.) Only Joni Mitchell would compile a career-spanning box set that sequences her sprawling, album-side-length epic "Paprika Plains" right next to the Great American Songbook-style "Blue Motel Room," because only Joni Mitchell would see both of those songs as equally representing "Joni's Jazz." © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz

Album Review: Joni's Jazz - Joni Mitchell
