May December Reviews

Oct 26, 2025

I don't remember when I watched a movie without knowing what will happen next in a long time. This one was unpredictable, dark, intriguing and overall it's hard to catch the vibe because the dialogues have layers and substance, which I really liked about this movie. Natalie Portman is not just a part of the cast but she's also a producer. The plot evolves around 3 people: Gracie, her husband Joe and actress Beth, who visited them to shoot a movie with intention to play Gracie in her independent project. Gracie met her now husband when he was in the 7th grade and she was 36 years old, that's when they started to have sexual relationships for which she was sent behind the bars, where she gave birth to their children. After her release they continued to raise their children. Beth spends time with their family in order to fully understand Gracie and to get into character. During her research she founds more details about Joe and Gracie and how exactly they got together in the first place. Idk why Google says that it's a rom-com... It's a psychological drama/thriller. It was a good movie, it felt different from anything else l've seen from the same genre.

Disappointed by the movie. I love Todd Haynes' previous works, such as 'Carol' (2015) and 'Far from Heaven', where, unlike it happens with this movie, you're enchanted by the slow-paced process of unraveling the plot, you feel touched —by the cinematography, actors, script— while in 'May December' the screenplay doesn't pass any serious test, it seems to go absolutely nowhere, with an exception, perhaps, of Gracie, who at the end says that she is a strong person (and we see her hunting before), in contrast with the way she is depicted the major part of the film. But, although it can be claimed that this movie can be accommodated within the film d'auteur tradition or arthouse cinema, its screenplay lacks some important parts of the Hero's journey, and with that I don't say that all movies should blindly follow the classical Hollywood structure, but some 'milestones' should be inevitably present to attract our attention, which is not the case. This film is like bland food. The bangs of the actress, played by Natalie, remind the bangs of the shy Therese, but don't provoke anything. Some frames and details, like surroundings of the house, episodes of daily life, are beautifully done from an aesthetic point of view, but lack a purpose. The good actors, as someone already commented, could not save the film. To my view, moreover, the characters of Joe and Elizabeth are rather plain. It can be summed up as two hours of lost time, and I really hope that the following work by this brilliant director will stand head and shoulders above this one. Well, not everything should be a success.

May December explores the complex and uncomfortable dynamics including trauma and exception, the nature of performance and reality, deception and the public's fascination with scandal. Although, the acting for a major highlight were Julliane Moore and Natalie Portman lauded for their portrayals of two women with shifting dynamics, but however, that was Charles Melton's performance as Joe garners the most praise critics found his portrayal of a man grappling with suppressed trauma to be deeply moving and heartbreakingly sincere, with Todd Haynes' direction noted for distinctive visual style and music creates the atmosphere of unsettling tension and discomfort, and as for Samy Burch's screenplay for it's clever and layered approach has been recommended.

Yaaaaawwwn. I'm normally a big NP fan but not here. Didn't care enough to finish it.

An uncomfortable reflection. May December is a fascinating film that manages to be both unsettling and captivating. It has that cold, calculated elegance that only Todd Haynes can bring to his stories, making every look, every silence, and every gesture feel heavy with meaning. What struck me most wasn’t just the peculiar or shocking aspects of the situation, but how the film becomes a profound examination of trauma, intimacy, and the power of media sensationalism. The performances are outstanding, with Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman showing all their skill in deeply layered roles, but for me it’s Charles Melton who truly shines, conveying a brutal and moving vulnerability. It’s the kind of film that feels uncomfortable to watch yet impossible to look away from.

It's like watching the last possible chance to preserve innocence slip silently out of reach.

This is faux biopic of Mary Kay teacher story I like how both Julian Moore and Charles Melton reprise their roles they did a wonderful job on playing the characters. The main theme of this film was the psychotic relationship this was in. In terms of the age difference on how it play apart throughout this film in terms of communication and stages of them. Overall, I would like to see a real biopic on their lives both of Mary Kay and Vili but for now this is a decent approach to it.

May December is an intriguing watch. Although most of the characters are highly unlikable, you can’t help but wonder how this will all turn out. The acting is superb across the board, especially Charles Melton’s understated performance. My main complaint is the score—it was a bit jarring and heavy-handed. If you’re looking for interesting psychological drama, then look no further than May December.

Complex and riveting performances from Moore and Portman takes this rather dull film and send it up several notches. Disturbing and unsettling throughout entire film on multiple levels.

A bit boring at times but that was the result of the realism; there were beautiful and powerful moments which ultimately made it a good film.

It is entertaining to see such incredible acting talent on screen… and disappointing and frustrating when it is given to such a sad and broken story with no redemption. The film’s Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay is… misplaced. It’s nothing special. CONTINUE READING ON LETTERBOXD: https://boxd.it/5ZK28n

I loved it. The acting was perfect. I've read a bunch of reviews and agree with the favorable ones and I love that Haynes left so much to the audience to cope with. One irony is that the plot of the film is ABOUT the movie studio/actress consulting with the "real life" subjects of their film. The audience of May December and at least Gracie are left wondering if anyone (or the film for that matter) will be better off for Elizabeth having done this. While in actual real life, the subjects that May December was not so loosely based upon were not consulted at all.

This Is A Uniquely Made Analysis Of Relationship Dynamics That I Wish We Could Get More Of... An Older Woman With a Young Partner... A Greatly Written Film, Well Acted And Directed.

Great performances from Julianne Moore and Charles Melton and a truly superb turn from Natalie Portman. Compelling even though nothing "happens," which is hard to pull off!

A drama that had the feel of a suspense. Very clearly states it's fictional, but well-known that it's based on a true story. Challenging moral questions are set, though in the end, there's no doubt there's a view that the protagonist that's portrayed is a bit of a controlling sociopath. I wouldn't want to be in the kids' situation, though they end up having a more harmonious home than many. Also, wonder if Julianne Moore actually went to meet the person the movie is really based on - that would be a story about that meeting... Also, not sure how this could be considered comedic at all.

Amazing and provocative but yet so subtle. I loved the riveting discomfort the movie imposes.

The story revolves around a woman who falls in love with a teenager, and their romantic relationship that persists after her prison and then release. She now lives in the same town, and is visited by an actress who is about to portray her in a movie. While the premise of the movie is promising, the movie overall falls flat. The pieces that may be clarifying are offered at a slow pace. Some are really interesting but not always rewarding enough to be able to overcome the movie’s slow and meandering pace

Not sure who this was for… I love Natalie Portman so I’ll watch anything with her in it, but the tone of this was weird and I don’t like the background of this movie not taking into account the actual people this story was based on.

May December's complex, quiet approach cleverly diverts from what would otherwise be a dull, unremarkable plot. In a tone as aggressive as a push off a cliff, Portman and Moore find themselves in a screen-thumping culmination of distorted and terrifying facts of what really happened, creating not only a darkly effective atmosphere but also a major showcase for Todd Haynes.
