Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Originally arranged as rehearsals for a one-off live show, the "Get Back" sessions proved to be the most directionless and destructive of the Beatles' career. With all four already pursuing personal projects, the tensions that would cause the final split were clearly in evidence from the start. Yet, as Michael Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 cinéma-vérité record proves, the band was still capable of producing classic pop music, with the impromptu back-to-basics performance on the roof of the Apple building being the highlight. Astonishingly honest in its revelations, this underrated and Oscar-winning film was later remastered by Peter Jackson's production company in the wake of The Beatles: Get Back, his eight-hour 2021 docuseries that also drew on Lindsay-Hogg's original footage. It offers a saddening, but pointedly intentional insight into the end of a dream.
