good news

We reported on Friday that we had 4 cats/kittens still available for adoption. While we want all of them to get homes, it really is the momma cats that we cross our paws for sometimes.

Well.....Friday we got good news. Someone had applied to adopt Delphi - momma cat to the Greek Kittens. And they came in Friday to pick her up and take her home. They do have a dog so hopefully she will be OK with that, but we are all thrilled that she has been picked!!

Friday when mom stopped at the adoption center, she and another volunteer were putting up a sign about a January adoption special. As they were working, a mid-sized orange and white tabby kept running around the floor, skidding into cats and other objects. After scanning him, they realized his name is Hemingway (though he is NOT polydactyl) and is about 6 months old. To amuse themselves, they got him on the cat wheel at the adoption center.....

Mom also did a rescue on New Year's Eve. She got a text from a lady she knows that they were hearing a neighbor abuse a cat. Arrangements were made and mom went out in the rain and picked up the cat. She is now safe with the rescue and mom is calling her Hope. She is pretty freaked out by all the other cats and the change of environment, but at least she is safe. The vet will get a good look at her once she calms down a little more. Mom did stop to see Hope on Friday and was allowed to scratch her head a little bit which is progress. Before you ask, we did think about fostering her and bringing her here, but she was pretty angry when mom tried to get her out of her carrier. She is actually better off at the center where she can be kept in a space where she is a little more contained.

Remember Me Thursday

Thanks to Lola the Rescued Cat and Three Chatty Cats for hosting the blog hop.

#RememberMeThursday was started in 2013 to shine a light on pets in shelters needing homes. While the numbers are not as bad as they used to be, reports state that almost 3 million adoptable pets lose their lives every year in shelters....just because they can't find a home.

While some promote adoption - and we are certainly in favor of that - we want to talk about spay and neuter. While adoptions reduce numbers, the sheer number of animals coming INTO shelters needs to be brought down. Spay/Neuter is the best way to do that....

Meet the momma cats of 2018:
Carling is a 5 year old calico
*she is looking for her forever home

Delphi is a 1 year old dilute tortoiseshell
*she is looking for her forever home

Cardamom is a 1 year old tuxedo
*she has already been adopted

These are just the moms of this year - between them they had 16 kittens. We don't know if Cardamom and Delphi have had previous litters...though it is possible. We HAVE to presume that Carling has had many previous litters. Just those numbers alone are scary. Now imagine they hadn't come into rescue. Three of the 16 kittens were girls. Those plus the moms continue to reproduce. Suddenly it goes from scary to staggering. Plus 2 single kittens with no moms - so who knows where they are and if they are going to be spayed.

Some of our 2017 numbers to consider:
  • 10 kittens with no mom that was brought in
  • 5 mom cats fostered
  • 16 kittens between 5 moms

There are things you can do:
  1. Get involved with a local rescue. If they don't have an onsite clinic, we bet they would love offers to help transport animals back and forth for surgery.
  2. Spread the word - you can search "low cost spay" on any search engine or the ASPCA has a searchable database
  3. Try some TNR - there is nothing more satisfying that hearing a door snap shut and knowing that you are helping control the local population. Keep talking about it - spread the word in your town and on social media.
  4. Support your local rescue with donations - we bet they have a wish list on their website.
We are making a difference....let's keep up the good work.

food review

We got this product from Chewy.com for free for our review. Getting the product does not affect our thoughts or opinions. All opinions in this post are our own.

This month mom decided to review the Weruva "Cats in the Kitchen" variety pack. Mom likes to have different things in the foster room cupboard just in case we have kittens or a momma cat that decide they only like certain things.

When mom went into the foster kitten room, this is what she found:

Mom sat on the floor and opened the pouch of food. She will say this - the pouches are nice for storage but they are danged hard to get everything OUT of the pouch.

Anyhow, she put the dish on the tray where the other food and water dish are located. And got....nothing. Hmmmm

So mom moved it a little closer to where Delphi was laying. It took about 15 seconds....Delphi's nose twitched and she was out of there. Kittens be darned - it was dinner time!!
Delphi gives this 2 paws up. The bowl was licked clean....

The nice part is this is a variety pack, so there are different things mom can try if Delphi decides she doesn't like a certain flavor. Two of them do have pumpkin added so those may be at the end of the list of things mom gives Delphi.

Thanks to Chewy and Weruva for the food - Delphi is feeding a growing family and certain appreciates the gooshy stuff!!

Kitten report

The kittens continue to do well. Mom Delphi is still a little skittish, but we had company over on Saturday to meet her and the kittens and after a couple of minutes she relaxed and even let Miss Z trim a couple of her nails.

She is attentive but not overly so which is good. Everyone is gaining weight and doing well. No eyeballs as of Sunday.
