Strong Winds - Friday & Saturday

Wintry Backcountry Conditions This Weekend

A period of gusty west-southwest winds will impact western Montana and north-central Idaho from Friday afternoon into early Saturday morning. Wind Advisories are currently in effect for parts of Northwest Montana. Expect sustained west-southwest winds of 10 to 25 mph, with widespread gusts reaching 30 to 45 mph. Locations situated east of large, north-south oriented mountain ranges are most likely to see the higher end of these wind speeds due to potential mountain wave activity. These winds will create rough, choppy conditions on area lakes. Gusts of this magnitude can also break tree branches, causing isolated wind damage, and will likely complicate efforts for active fires, prescribed burns, and project burns.

Following unseasonably warm temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees above normal, a significant weather change will arrive in the Northern Rockies by Friday evening. A cold front Friday afternoon will bring strong winds, followed by a system that will lower snow levels to around 5,500 feet in Northwestern Montana by Saturday morning. Backcountry users in higher terrain such as Glacier National Park, including Logan Pass, should expect localized snow accumulations and breezy conditions. This drastic change increases the risk of hypothermia. Anyone planning prolonged periods in the high alpine should reconsider their plans or ensure they are fully prepared for winter weather.
