(I’m rotating it with my detox soup and cabbage soup this week!) The vitamin-packed fresh greens, fruit, and coconut water leave me feeling refreshed, and it tastes amazing. Plus, it’s super fast, so you can enjoy a quick reset even when you’re short on time. Blend up this green smoothie with me and see why I love it!
Why You Need My Detox Smoothie Recipe
- Thick and creamy with a tropical flavor – There are a million ways to make healthy smoothies for detox, but I went all-in on the tropical island vibes with pineapple and coconut water. You’ll feel like you’re at the beach! Plus, it’s nice and thick.
- 5 simple ingredients – And ready in just a couple minutes. It’s perfect for a quick-fix healthy snack or as an easy breakfast recipe.
- Less sugar – Most people don’t make detox smoothie recipes with actual added sugar, but you’ll often find fruit juice in them, which has tons of sugar. My version only uses whole fruit to sweeten, and it’s only 8.9 grams of sugar per serving!
- Makes you feel so good – My detox smoothie is loaded with nutrients, electrolytes, and antioxidants, so it’ll leave you feeling great. Plus, it’s gluten-free, vegan, whole30, and paleo.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for my green detox smoothie recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
- Fresh Spinach – Baby spinach or mature leaves both work great. You can use frozen if you like, but it’s more concentrated, so I’d recommend no more than 1/4 the amount. Otherwise, other greens (like kale, Swiss chard, or collard greens) are great.
- Pineapple Chunks – For sweetness and tangy, tropical flavor! I use frozen chunks, because they’re cheaper and make the smoothie frosty cold, but fresh or even canned will work. For a different flavor, feel free to swap in frozen mango or peaches, or frozen berries for lower carbs (you might need to add a sweetener with those).
- Avocado – This secret ingredient makes the detox smoothie super creamy and adds a boost of healthy fats. If you’ve tried my strawberry avocado smoothie, you know you won’t taste it at all. 😉 When my avocado isn’t having its perfect day (lol), I substitute a banana or a cup of Greek yogurt (or coconut yogurt).
- Coconut Water – I like this brand that has no added sugar, but this organic one is a good option if you want a sweetened version. If you don’t have any, you might have the ingredients to make my electrolyte drink recipe as a substitute — or simply use coconut milk, hemp milk, or almond milk.
- Fresh Ginger – Adds a little tropical zing and it’s a detox powerhouse. I recommend grating it, as larger pieces don’t always blend well. I love this zester or this grater. You can substitute a dash of ground ginger, or add other spices (like turmeric, cinnamon, or cayenne pepper) for their benefits.
- Chia Seeds – Optional, but they thicken the smoothie and have their own benefits. Flax seeds or hemp seeds work, too.
How To Make Detox Smoothies
Simply toss the ingredients in a blender and blitz until smooth! Feel free to use any of my substitutions above — smoothies are easy.
Just make sure your blender is powerful enough to blend frozen ingredients. I have this high-powered blender and it works perfectly after so many years.
My Recipe Tips
- Need to adjust the sweetness? If you find the smoothie too sweet, add a splash of lemon or lime juice, a pinch of salt, or blend in a cucumber. If it’s not sweet enough, blend in a little more fruit — you can thin out with extra coconut water if needed.
- Need to adjust the thickness? Add more coconut water to make your smoothie thinner, or more pineapple or spinach to thicken. You can also thicken with extra avocado (not my favorite because it requires cutting open another one and you won’t use the whole thing) or nut butter.
- Want a protein boost? Toss in a scoop of your favorite protein powder (I love this collagen protein powder) for extra staying power.
- You can even turn this detox smoothie into popsicles! Simply pour it into molds (I have and love these stainless steel ones) and freeze for a refreshing, healthy treat.

0Do you have to put pineapple in this recipe and what can I replace it with for me pineapple is too sweet and I do do sweet things
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Wayne, I would recommend berries instead if you want it less sweet. I wouldn’t say this smoothie is SUPER sweet even with the pineapple though.
Donna

0Love this! … The only change for me is … I’m using Greek Yogurt in most of my smoothies right now for the protein, and because I like it … And I usually use filtered water to loosen it up a bit.
Debbie
0Hi Maya, I’m sensitive to coconut, would plain water be okay to use?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Debbie, You could use plain water, but I think it would taste pretty bland. I’d recommend one of the other substitutes I have listed above if you can’t use coconut water.
Marjorie Heard
0Hi Maya, could I use coconut milk instead of the water. Not a fan!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Marjorie, Yes, coconut milk would work great!
Darlene Young
0Great healthy smoothie, but 11.2 net carbs per serving is way to much for one drink.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Darlene, I would not call this recipe low carb, just a healthy smoothie.
