Find Song Avoiding that Ratio
Nobody wants to get ratioed, which is when your post or comment online gets dunked on and everyone takes the other person's side. In essence, they get more likes or upvotes than you, making you look bad. That's why we talked to internet experts to tell us how to avoid getting ratioed by behaving well online:
- Etiquette coach Christine Ferrera says that when commenting online, "the most important thing is how you deliver your messages. [Be] clear, concise so that the listener will take away what you intend for them to receive. We talk all the time. However, are we delivering what we intend to say (as in no filler wordsâsay what you have to say)."[1]
- Etiquette coach Carolyn Powery says that to stay engaged and friendly, you should respond when people comment on your posts. "Itâs just like having a face-to-face conversationâif someone speaks to you and you ignore them, it feels rude. The same applies online."[2]
- Powery adds, "Another important thing is knowing when to engage and when to stay silent. Not everything online deserves a response. There are trolls, and sometimes, the best strategy is to ignore them."[3]
- Clinical psychologist Dr. Niall Geoghegan, PsyD, says to stay away from internet trolls when you spot them, and not to engage. You'll never win with a troll![4]
- Cyber safety specialist Scott Nelson, JD, says the best practice is "not being afraid to block somebody or leave the chat room, if you feel intimidated or threatened... You need to feel comfortable breaking that chat communication immediately if you do feel threatened."[5]
