Last weekend’s box office was mostly as expected, with Mickey 17 debuting in the number one spot, earning a smidgen over $19 million in its three-day start. The film has since accrued another $5.5 million and currently enjoys a six-day total of $24.57 million. This week’s race is anyone’s game, as five new wide releases make their way into theaters, including Black Bag and Novocaine, both of which will give everything they have to claim that top spot.

Captain America: Brave New World once again landed the number one spot at the domestic box office last weekend, scoring over $28 million in its second weekend and doubling the second place finisher, The Monkey, as it made its first foray onto the big screen, opening just above $14 million from 3,200 locations. This weekend, three new wide releases will make their debuts, but for at least one more week, Captain America will remain the widest release in the land.

Despite the arrival of two newcomers to the big screen, it was a rather slow weekend at the domestic box office with Dog Man scoring just shy of $14 million, taking top billing in its second weekend and stifling the debuts of Love Hurts and Heart Eyes, which closed out the weekend with earnings of $5.8 million and $8.31 million, respectively. This weekend brings on two more films making their first foray into cinemas, including Captain America: Brave New World.

It is another slow week on the home market, but that gave me a chance to complete a couple of late reviews. The best release on this week’s list is A Face in the Crowd and it is the Pick of the Week. However, both of the late reviews, On the Basis of Sex and Willie Dynamite, are worth picking up.

Thor: Ragnarok continues a remarkable record for the Marvel Cinematic Universe this weekend by posting a $121 million opening weekend, according to Disney’s Sunday morning estimate. That’s a significant increase from the $85.7 million of Thor: Dark World, and means that each sub-franchise based on an individual character has had increasing open box office from film to film: Iron Man’s openings went from $102 million, to $128 million, to $174 million; Captain America went $65 million, $95 million, $179 million; and now Thor has gone $65 million, $86 million, and $121 million.

The Angry Birds Movie is performing at the top end of expectations this weekend, and will top the box office chart with a commendable $39 million. While that’s a long way behind the $75.1 million earned by Zootopia on its opening weekend back in March, it’s a very respectable figure, and gives Sony the increasingly-rare bragging rights over Disney this weekend, with Captain America: Civil War dropping to second place with $33.1 million.

As expected, Captain America: Civil War dominated the box office chart on Friday, earning $19.44 million. However, this is down 74% from its opening Friday, which is a sharper-than-expected drop. It will bounce back over the weekend to earn $70 million, but that’s a loss of over $100 million from its opening weekend. It is also not enough to get it to $300 million this weekend. It will get there on Monday, on the other hand. Again, I must emphasize that this is only bad when compared to monstrous expectations. Its sophomore decline will be about 60%, which is in line with Age of Ultron. Additionally, Civil War is already the biggest hit for the Captain America franchise at the worldwide box office and will be the first of the three films to reach the $1 billion mark. There’s no reason to be upset at its box office run so far.

Beauty and the Beast is a remake of the 1987 series of the same name. That show starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman and while it only lasted two seasons (the third season with Linda Hamilton hardly counts) it developed a very loyal fan base. This remake was not greeted with a lot of critical praise, while its ratings dropped from 2.78 million for the series premiere to just 1.26 million for the season finale. Were the critics right? Were viewers wise to abandon the show?
