Eggnog Syrup Recipe

Eggnog syrup is a holiday tradition in the making. It's loaded with traditional maple flavor but backed up by warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, plus a dash of rum extract. Just 3 ingredients and 10 minutes until you have a warm, festive accompaniment to any festive breakfast.

Why combine eggnog and syrup?

Yes, both eggnog and maple syrup are delicious in their own right, but when you combine them something special happens.

Eggnog is a traditional holiday drink made up of eggs, milk, and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. It tastes like Christmas in a cup! Combine these flavors with the maple from the syrup and you have yourself a festive, warmly spiced version of maple syrup.

Eggnog does not contain alcohol, however, this eggnog syrup recipe does call for ½ teaspoon of rum extract. Keep in mind that adding rum extract has a small amount of alcohol. You can omit it if you prefer the recipe to be non-alcoholic. If you choose to keep the rum extract in your eggnog syrup, it adds a delicious toasty flavor to the condiment.

Think of eggnog syrup as a warm hug on a blustery winter morning. It's a beautiful thing.

Ingredients to make eggnog syrup

You can probably guess by now what's in eggnog syrup – it's delightfully simple:

  1. Eggnog: Grab your favorite store-bought eggnog (it can be dairy-free or vegan) or you can make some yourself. You'll need ¾ cups for this recipe.
  2. Maple syrup: Use ¾ cups of pure maple syrup for this recipe. You could use table syrup, however, it simply won't taste as good without the maple flavor.
  3. Rum extract: This is optional, however, it does complement the toasty cinnamon and nutmeg flavors of the eggnog.

  2. Put it in a jar and start drizzling: Once it's cooled a little, add the eggnog syrup to a jar or sealable container and drizzle away!

How to serve eggnog syrup

There are lots of ways you can use eggnog syrup over the holidays; here's some ideas for inspiration:

  • Drizzle over eggnog pancakes, cranberry pancakes, french toast, or add it to your oatmeal
  • Use your eggnog syrup for coffee
  • Use it in baked goods
  • Add it to granola
  • Add some to your favorite smoothie, like this pear smoothie or this chocolate chia seed smoothie

Recipe FAQs

Can I use table syrup instead of maple syrup?

Table syrup does not taste the same as maple syrup. Maple syrup is a natural sweetener that comes from maple trees whereas table syrup is made with corn syrup and other additives. You won't get the maple flavor when using table syrup and for this reason, maple syrup is recommended.

I don't like eggnog, can I use eggnog spice instead?

If you aren't a fan of the texture or ingredient list of eggnog, you can use eggnog spice in your syrup. Follow the instructions in this recipe to add spices to the maple syrup.

Can I use dairy-free or vegan eggnog to make eggnog syrup?

Absolutely! Dairy-free eggnog is widely available, so pick up your favorite kind and use it as instructed in this recipe.

Can I reheat eggnog syrup?

You can reheat it once, at most twice, however, reheating will start to compromise the integrity of the syrup. More than this is not recommended. It's best to make it as you need it. It's also just fine to serve it from the fridge, as you've likely done with regular maple syrup.

How long will eggnog syrup last?

Make sure your eggnog has a long expiration date, as this can impact how long your eggnog syrup lasts. Once the eggnog syrup is cooled, you can store it in the fridge in a sealed container for 5-7 days.
