Being a bandleader with a rotating cast of supporting players means not having to convince other members to follow your new musical directions. On the Boggs‘ 2002 debut, We Are The Boggs We Are, Jason Friedman’s project played spur-propelled cowpoke punk, with banjos, slide guitars and rustic percussion. Featuring Christian Obermaier (from the indie-electronic outfit Schneider TM) and Julian Gross (from noise-punk provocateurs the Liars), among others, Friedman’s new crew recently released Forts, a striking departure from the O Brother aesthetic. Alternating jagged new-wave riffs and psychedelic jangles, unhurried sing-alongs and propulsive beats, Forts redefines the Boggs as a dance-folk hybrid.
