We all know cats love boxes. Probably much more than any other toy you could buy in a store. So why spend extra money buying cat houses and trinkets to entertain your cat when you can build your own cat house with old boxes from your basement? The answer is you don’t have to! Try our fun and inexpensive option of building your own cardboard cat house.
What you will need
- Medium Moving Box
- Utility knife or box cutter
- Glue gun
- Paint/decorations
- Extra box flap
- Painter’s tape
Step 1
Flip the box over and tape the bottom of the box closed using the painter’s tape.
Step 2
Turn the box upright and use your ruler as a straight edge to cut the front and the back box flaps into the shape of a triangle, using your box cutter. This will serve as the roof’s peak.
Step 3
Fold the two side box flaps down about in inch wide. This will serve as a place holder for the top of the roof.
Step 4
Using the glue gun, glue one side of the extra box flap down to the folded, inch wide piece of the box. Do the same to the other side.
Step 5
Fold and tape the extra flaps of the roof peaks down to the top of the roof using the painter’s tape.
Step 6
Using the box cutter, cut out your doors and windows. Ensure the door holes are big enough for your cat to fit through.
Step 7 (Optional)
Now that the boring stuff it is out of the way – Be as creative as you’d like! Paint and decorate your cat house to your heart’s desire. Have fun with it! You can add toys, string and ALL the bells and whistles you want. Or… maybe leave off the bells and whistles – it might drive you crazy after a while.
If you are feeling adventurous feel free to build a cardboard fort, a cardboard castle, or even a cardboard tank for your cat. Go as big as you’d like. Either way you decide to go, your little furry friend will love their new cardboard home.
