my father said, but in spite
of this—I crept back
into the bathroom the next afternoon.
As the radio played
I grabbed my mother's nail polish
from under the sink.
Sat on the tiles,
I painted until he found me.

He took acetone to it
not knowing
my skin was purple on the inside.
I brought that secret everywhere.
