Key takeaways

  • Factors affecting the cost of stucco installation include your home’s features and where you live

  • Stucco is versatile and durable, but more costly than many other types of siding

  • Synthetic—or EIFS—stucco costs more to install than traditional stucco

If you’re planning a home improvement that involves replacing old siding or installing new siding during construction, consider stucco as an option.

Made primarily of cement and sand, the main components of concrete. Stucco compares well with other siding materials, such as vinyl or wood siding. Stucco siding is resistant to damage by insects, rot, sun, or moisture, and it’s extremely durable. It’s particularly popular with the architectural style of houses in arid climates such as the southwest and the west because it holds up well in sun and heat.

Though knowledgeable DIY homeowners may be able to handle minor stucco repair issues involving existing stucco, applying new stucco should be left to stucco professionals who have the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools. A poorly-done stucco project can be a disaster because of stucco’s permanence.

Total stucco costs

There are two main types of stucco to choose from. Here are typical national average costs per square foot (sq. ft.) for the different types of stucco:

  • Traditional stucco installation costs: $7–11 per square foot

  • Synthetic stucco (EIFS) installation costs: $9–15 per square foot

Traditional stucco (also called “hard-coat”) is mixed from Portland cement, sand, ground limestone, and water. The resulting paste is trowelled over metal lath (usually steel mesh) that is attached to house siding, sheathing (called a “substrate”), or concrete.

During stucco application, three coats are applied: base coat, scratch coat, and the finishing coat. The stucco finish can be tinted to any of many colors. Traditional stucco is heavy (about 10 pounds per square foot) and will crack with any building movement due to settling or earthquakes.

Synthetic stucco (also called “EIFS” for External Insulation and Finishing System) is a one-coat stucco finish system that is applied over sheathing or exterior insulation board. Synthetic stucco materials include a cement base coat, fiberglass mesh reinforcement, and an acrylic topcoat. Because it’s acrylic, it’s more flexible than traditional stucco, so it is less prone to cracking. It has at least twice the insulation value of traditional stucco and is about 80% lighter in weight. On the downside, synthetic stucco siding installation is more involved and expensive than installing traditional stucco.

On the low-end, applying traditional stucco to a 1-story house might cost a total of $5,800–12,500. On the high-end, replacing old stucco with EIFS (synthetic) stucco on a larger 2-story house can result in cost estimates as high as $15,000–24,000+

If existing stucco siding has just a few square feet of damage, the service for stucco repair typically costs $150–500

Cost factors

These variables can impact the total cost of stucco projects:

  • Complexity. Exterior walls that have unusual shapes, curves, nooks, and crannies are tricky to stucco, particularly when dealing with synthetic stucco. Figure 10–25% higher stucco prices for irregular situations.

  • House height. Stucco installation can be more challenging on a two- or three-story home than on a single-story house because extensive scaffolding may be required. When this is the case, expect a 10–20% higher quote for this additional cost.

  • Region. Stucco companies and contractors are plentiful in certain regions where stucco is a primary type of siding, such as the southwest. Stucco siding costs—both labor costs and material costs—in those areas are likely to be about 10–30% lower than in regions where stucco is less common, such as the midwest.

  • Preparation. If you want to have new stucco applied to a stucco house, any loose old stucco must be removed by scraping or sandblasting, which can cost from $2.00–7.50 per square foot more. For more information, see Cost of sandblasting

How to save money

Try these ideas to save on stucco project costs:

  • Get multiple bids. It’s always smart to get multiple bids from stucco contractors. Because labor is a major factor in the cost of installing stucco, the quotes from different stucco contractors can vary significantly. Catching a stucco contractor between jobs is likely to get you a lower bid.

  • Go with traditional stucco. In most cases, it will be cheaper than synthetic stucco. As a more affordable alternative, you might even explore having a siding contractor install fiber cement siding, which looks similar to stucco.

FAQs

How much does it cost to stucco a 1,000 sq ft house?

The cost to apply stucco to a small 1,000 square foot house averages in the $5,000–9,500 range. Keep in mind that the size of a house’s floor plan is not the same as the square footage of its exterior walls (1,000 square feet of exterior walls would cost about $7,000–11,000). Home’s of different shapes will vary in cost and difficulty.

How much does it cost to install stucco per square foot?

The average cost to install stucco siding ranges from $7–15 per square foot. This price depends on what type of stucco you choose, the condition of your previous siding, and where you live.

Is it cheaper to do stucco or vinyl siding?

Vinyl siding is a cheaper siding option than stucco—at 10–40% less. But many homeowners continue to choose stucco for its looks, durability, and fire resistance.
