It is still open. I was there just a few hours ago and had a great Ortega Cheeseburger. and a Blackberry Sundae. Sorry no pictures.

Since I've been traveling all around NorCal this year, I've noticed that lots of little mountain towns have mom and pop frosty shops.

They're usually incredibly popular, and not very good. I can't explain why, but, I want to try them all, so--

I recently stopped by Mono Cone, and ordered a small vanilla cone dipped in chocolate.

I used to work for the Golden Arches during their dipped cone era, so I know a thing or two about dipped cones.

They are a lot trickier to make than they look. It takes someone with great wrist proprioception to get it just right.

Much to my delight, my cone came out looking esthetically perfect. Unfortunately, the flavor didn't quite match.

The ice cream was fine-- just your standard vanilla soft serve, nothing special-- but the chocolate dip tasted a few days old. Not stale, but not great.

In order for the dip to stay fresh, the restaurant needs to sell enough to go through a whole can a day, which is probably why so many places choose not to invest in this process.

On the other hand, if I didn't know so much about dipped cones, maybe I would have been happy just to be able to find one.

After I ordered, I noticed that they also have flavor fusion cones. That's probably not the right name for it, but they are cones with swirls of other flavors in them.

I've seen these before, but have never gotten around to trying them. If I had read the menu more thoroughly before ordering, that's what I would have ordered.

(I might have to come back for a swirled cone.)

There was plenty of parking, and the wait was not too bad.

What's not to like. After a warm day at Mono Lake, we stopped at Mono Cone. We started with a cheese burger, a BBQ bacon cheeseburger and some pickle fries. All were exactly what you expected from a road side stand, but on the tasty side. We finished with some soft serve ice cream. Both were half vanilla half chocolate. Mine was dipped in chocolate.

The staff was nice and service was as quick as you can expect. I'm glad we stopped here.

Best Ice Cream spot in the city! That is to say it's the only spot but I like it. Basic snack bar. Kinda sentimental about this place as I was one of the first after the unnecessary lockdown from the Covid days. During the summer months on a long hot drive, this place is like a mirage in the simmering heat. Good soft serve ice cream. Dipped cones, different flavors, of course swirl. Also burgers, chin sandwiches, tacos tots and other snack bar type food and drinks. Youngsters working there are nice and efficient. During the summer months it gets very busy. Even last week, mid October there was a line of people. Plenty of parking, lots of and street. A little indoor seating. Perfect for a rest stop. Cash only I believe but that's how I pay anyway. Worth the stop.

Been coming here for 20+ years. The best cheeseburgers and shakes. So glad we got to bring our baby girl here (keeping the tradition going)

Cash only! Luckily we had enough cash on us.

Good soft serve ice cream and shakes! We didn't try the other items on their menu. They only have three flavors (vanilla, chocolate, or swirl) and only two dipped options (chocolate and butterscotch).

There's a small room to the side with small tables and chairs for indoor seating. There is a cute outdoor patio with seating behind too.

There is usually a line out front to order from the window but it moves pretty quickly. The guy taking our orders was friendly.

Cash only! Very busy establishment so be patient. Limited parking. Kiddos got the special cones with multiple flavors and loved them.

We were driving along 395 and expected Lee Vining to still be closed for the season when BAM! I saw that the famed Mono Cone had a line - meaning it was open! We flipped a quick j and parked - so happy to place an order for burgers, chicken, soft serve, and milkshakes! So much better then the protein bars stashed in the car! Not only was the food good but the ice cream and the milkshakes were PHENOMENAL! PHENOMENAL! While we waited we checked out the Upside Down House (closed, through the window) and them items in the outdoor Mono Basin Historisal Society & Museum - everyone in line and eating seemed local and so happy to be there - I had read about Mono Cone on the FB 395 group and was just so happy to get a cone! GET A MILKSHAKE!

We stopped by after coming out of Yosemite. I'm so glad we went here. The staff were very friendly. I had a double bacon cheeseburger. Fresh ingredients, made to order and one of the best burgers I've ever had. Fries were perfectly thin and crispy. My wife had just a chicken breast. However, she said it was very good and actually better than the resort we stayed at. The soft serve ice cream was amazing. I've never had a better soft serving period. The texture was super creamy without one bit of ice crystals. Do yourself a favor and eat at Mono Cone!!!!

No pretentiousness here. I got a crispy chicken sandwich, very good. The person who took my order was friendly. The price was very reasonable. I liked the experience enough to stop again on my return trip. I ordered the same thing. The staff were again friendly and I got my food even faster. That second time, I also stopped in the rest room and was pleasantly surprised at how bright and clean it was despite looking like it's from the '60s or '70s. (How often do we encounter clean, bright fast food restaurant bathrooms?!!)

I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to pop in for a quick bite.
