Many species of fish are suitable for aquaculture and aquaponics. Species which have been researched and successfully reared in cages in the southeastern region of the U.S. include:catfish, trout, tilapia, striped bass, red drum, bluegill sunfish, crappie, and carp. As this interest continues to increase, more research into cage culture techniques and alternate species will no doubt occur. We have a PDF you can look at about freshwater species.
Flood and drain system on a 15 minute cycle with about 25 tilapia in the reservoir. They provide nutrients for the plants in the above grow chambers. Nutrients are pumped into the chambers with a pump, and then drain back down into the tank This is almost a closed system, we occasionally add iron and fish food. The tilapia will eventually be harvestable. An excellent way to grow protein and produce! Visit Worm's Way to get started on your #aquaponic system!
Stocking your pond with fish
Stocking a pond with fish. A pond that's properly stocked & managed will give you years of fishing enjoyment. Some states offer stocking programs, but commercial hatcheries are also available. When choosing a species of fish to stock in a new pond, you need to consider both the size of the fish & the size of your pond. Stock fish in the fall or spring, when water temperatures are less than 65 degrees F.
