Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) After purchasing two releases from Brazilian neo-prog band "Ars Pro Vita", which both reminded me quite a bit of ancient "Genesis" treasures, I was suffering from an acute obstinate GRMS (Genesis Retro-Mood Syndrome), in turn triggering memories of this EP, which was buried somewhere deep in my wishlist. Well, my opinion about this three-track release is somewhat split, to be honest: It starts splendid with the 15-minute title track, then becomes so-so with the second track titled "Believe In Somebody", but finally crashes violently on the hard ground of uninspired nothingness with "Janice". The title track, however, is a real killer and the sole reason why I bought this oddly heterogenous EP in the first place. "(Second) Home By The Sea"... er... nah, "...In Your Thoughts", of course, undoubtedly draws on "Genesis" heritage, but in a very charming way. While many 15-minute epics attempted by others run dry after half of the running time, this one takes an excellent instrumental turn after the incredibly catchy first half. That's how a long-track should sound like! Favorite track: A Home In Your Thoughts / Second Home In Your Thoughts.

about

Aethellis continues its amalgamation of progressive structures, pop hooks and funky grooves with the new collection of songs, A Home In Your Thoughts.

By turns plaintive and inspiring, “A Home In Your Thoughts” is meditation on the persistence of overcoming obstacles, while the joyous, uplifting and powerful “Second Home In Your Thoughts” represents the fruition of that persistence with its multi-thematic epic structure.

“Janice,” tells the story of a divorced man attempting to reconcile with his ex, detailing his frustrations, yearning and ultimately his belief in the power of love. Add this to an infectious funky groove that spirals into prog territory in the latter half of the song which includes jazzy riffs and solos and concludes with a variation on the main riff but this time in 5/4 (which is hinted at earlier in the song).

Finally, “Believe In Somebody” is a punchy concise pop/rock offering with prog flourishes and more uplifting lyrics. This song received the Runner Up Award from the 2014 Song of the Year Contest.

This inspiring Aethellis collection could be considered a concept EP about overcoming obstacles by believing in oneself.

Track 3 - Janice
(C) 1992 Mark L. Van Natta and Ellsworth R. Hall;
(P) 2018 Mark L. Van Natta, Ellsworth R. Hall, and Mike Harrington.

["A Home In Your Thoughts / Second Home In Your Thoughts"] demonstrates the musicians' talents off very well and the final segment of this track is a lengthy, very prog inspired piece which has elements of Yes in evidence. This is a great piece of music with much to enjoy across it’s fifteen minute duration, fifteen very worthy minutes in fact!

["Believe In Somebody"] features a very memorable and catchy chorus, strong lyrics and all set against a quite strident beat. Add to this pulsating keyboards, great guitar lines, pushed by some chunky chords making this a catchy and memorable track indeed.

"Janice" steams along, always retaining its melodic sensibilities and simply a magnificent track to close what is a very worthy EP.
