Fatou Niang Siga was born in 1932 in Saint-Louis, in Senegal. She is a Moslem and a follower of "mouridisme". Her ancestors come from the valley of the rivers Senegal and Djolof. Her father was the first African archivist in Senegal; her mother brought up twelve children (six girls and six boys). On the advice of the local schoolmistress, Fatou Niang Siga's father decided to send his daughter to primary school when she was 7 years old. Thereafter she went to the Faidherbe high school which she left in 1951 having finished her secondary education. She then became a school teacher. She has been on pilgrimage twice to Mecca. For more than thirty years she has lived in Saint-Louis and is currently living with her husband and some of her children. (In 1991 the ages of her twelve children ranged from 16 to 39).
