Rabiatou NJOYA An author from Cameroon writing in French [Return to French — Page originale en français]

Princess Rabiatou Njoya, wife of Nsangou, was born in 1945. She is the daughter of the Sultan, Mayor of Foumban, a small town in the Cameroon where Bamoun is spoken. She lived there with her family, including numerous brothers and sisters, until the age of 14. She then went to the Général Leclerc grammar school in Yaoundé. In 1967 she spent a year at the Thurrock Technical School in England, then five years in Paris, where she went to the Sorbonne and obtained a degree in English and Spanish and a diploma in translating. She has taught English and Spanish for many years and in 1991 was working as a translator and researcher. A Moslem, she has made the pilgrimage to Mecca. At present (1991) she lives in Yaoundé with her family.

Written in extremely concrete language, The last loved one denounces the vices and practices carried out by members of a certain tradition who use it for their own purposes.

The Bamoun Kingdom, to the West of the Cameroon, has a picturesque history which is still very much alive and which relies on age-old traditions. It serves as the inspiration for these two plays which are linked by the same internal logic, that of the gaining of power...(Back cover)
