RIP Ozzy Osbourne

....somehow weird and macabre that my last post was Back to the Beginning about OZZY and his celebration...now Ozzy has left the building...I think happier than before this last fantastic gig...

RIP Ozzy Osbourne, Sweet Prince (of Darkness also;), the Man, The Legend, the History of Heavy Metal Incarnate...saw him with Black Sabbath in Sofia and Solo in Bucharest. He was a good (and more than virtual friend of mine since 8th grade, faithful during his eighties excess (with a soft spot for the Randy Rhoades tragedy, the Alamo showdown, the Sharon incidents and the Bat kill) , his 90's comeback (No More Tears and Ozzmosis), and the 2000's Sabbath Reunions and peace agreements. I even watched some of The Osbournes, who made him really a star in the US. In my first Doc and Roll festival in Brasov back in 2014 we showed a great doc about him,  God Bless Ozzy Osbourne –2011, after which screening even my mom liked him ;) (they were born the same day... )

...oddly just two days ago I was listening to his penultimatealbum, Ordinary Man . One of my Top albums of 2020. It's an album marked by death and loss, ike Sabbath's The End (2016). His last was Patient No. 9 in 2022, featuring the late now Jeff Beck. 

End of an Era. Full Point. 

As he was a fan of John Lennon, the Working Class Hero song would've suited him (Ozzy had a cover of Lennon's signature song on his cover album Under Cover from 2005)...

RIP Sly Stone

Sylvester Stewart aka Sly Stone (leader of legendary funk-soul group Sly and the Family Stone) went away to the other side... He was 82. He is the godfather of funk (adelik), soul master, Uber rockstar in hiss day and a raw model for Prince. Also for Nile Rodgers, George Clinton and many others, black or white. He upped James Brown's game to a a musical level of perfection. His band played Woodstock in 1969, one of the high(er!) acts of the monumental event. And I mean, who ever married on Madison Square Garden and Live ? (in 1974!).

There's a great documentary about him, that just premiered in Sundance Fest. this January and was streamed by Hulu (in Ro on Disney+) in Feb. 2025. Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of the Black Genius), directed by Questlove, musician on his own. See it and you'll get why Sly was the slyest ;) He did a big big thing for Black musicians way back when segregation was All Time(s) Nigh !

Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party (2024)

There was one doc about Tom Petty, Peter Bogdaovich's exhaustive 4 hrs. Running Down a Dream (2007). Now there's also Somewhere You Feel Free (2021), about the amking of his album Wildflowers. And now this Lost documentary about Tom Petty in 1983. And the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party  came out in US theaters in 2024 for a few days, ultra limited. It's the 1st film (lost too) of Cameron Crowe. Featuring the grand weird desert video of "You Got Lucky" from Long After Dark (1982). And the outtakes. And the making of a director - C.C. -

The film was restored for a one-weekend theatrical release in October2024 (on Tom's Bday), and it’s now available to stream on Paramount+ as of March 11.

RIP David Johanson

David Johanson from The New York Dolls to his alter ego Buster Pointdexter is gone. He was 75 (born Jan. 9th 1950). No more "Personality Crisis"... Amazingly he lived to be 75 while his bandmates (Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, Arthur Kane, Jerry Nolan, Bill Murcia) and the other tough & rough dudes of the era are long gone and buried. The Dolls reunion album (only Johanson and Sylvain) in 2006 was entitled prophetically, "One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This".  , (which incidentally I found & bought at the time on CD in Romania !).

Martin Scorsese (with David Tedeschi) directed a rockumentary, more like a concert film, Personality Crisis: For one Night Only for Showtime, in 2023.

it's a one night allshow with Johanson singing, crosscut with archival footage, interviews- talking funny about his life, a sort of comedic one, as his sense of humor was absolutely great !

He is one of the BIG ONES, of the stature of Iggy and the last of its time, only Patti Smith is still here....unfortunately the world today (hah..what world ?) has forgotten those wild dayz and wild people. Cos it seems they only cahanged t for a while, changed themselves and some of us, and the rest still conformed and zombified. Can't put Your Arms Around a Memory, oh yes, you can !!!

RIP Shane MacGowan

He did his share, my share, your share, everyone 's share....Shane, Shane, Shane...

Shane MacGowan dead at 65...his last years were tough as his health was in tatters...I saw him in Dublin in June 2019 when The Pretenders opened for Fleetwood Mac and Chrissie Hynde brought him on stage to do an emotional upbeat cover of "I Got You, Babe" with Shane. He was in a wheelchair :(, touching moment that now has a totally different value...(u can see the video here )

Shane was the lead of Irish Celtic punk band The Pogues. Just to be clear.... Founded in King's Cross, London, in 1982, as Pogue Mahone – an anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic phrase póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse".

Amazingly they pulled one of the most beloved Xmas songs, Fairytale of New York. Like a drunken Tom Waits song, featuring the singer Kirsty Mc Call who died in a freak accident in  2000 at 41!!!!    For me it wasn't this one or One Rainy Night in Soho, but Summer in Siam. And Dirty Old Town. 

Later on they kicked Shane out of the band for not showing up too many times. That was in 1991 in Japan. He started another band, Shane MacGowan and the Popes. The Pogues dissolved in 1996.They put on two albums without Shane. They regrouped in 2001 with MacGowan, playing hecticly 'til 2014. During the '00's MacGowan started doing heroin, when booze and smokes were not enough. Sinead O'Connor denounced him to the coppers. MacGowan didn't mind. He knew she, troubled mate soul of his, was right. Well, she died before him  (this July no less) and was only 56. Since 2015 he was permanenetly in a wheelchair. He had viral encephalitis but he died of tuberculosis.

Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas, on Dec. 25, 1957. He died on the night of November 30, at 3.30 am. We were partying Pogues style. Life...

And just found out there is a documentary about him, produced by Johnny Depp and directed by Julian Temple, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan, released in 2020. Special Award of the  Jury at San Sebastian festival that year. Watching it tonight, the rounds we had last night with crazy and manic friends, just the way Shane would've loved to go...

Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door (1979)

I was alwasys fascinated with the last Led Zeppelin album,  In Through the Out Door (1979), see I was not contemponary with them so, as much as I was exposed to all I, II, III, IV, and in the eighties Houses of the Holy was was faved, this album stuck with me because it was their most eclectic, weird and it seems everyone hated it. Why? cos' they would not like them to play like that? or just philistines ;)....

Anyhu, recently I got on on youtube a podcast of a Spanish guy, JCM (Jose Calvo Monturiol),  obsessed with this album, hid fave Zep LP, who wants to make justice to the album, and way more...He is a lifelong fan of Zep and a player in his own right.

There are seven episodes of In Through the Out Door (from 1974 to 1980, complete with the whole year events, up to the death of Bonham  (September 25th 1980) 

and also a new podcast of Post Zeppelin now, 1981-1989).  even more fasinating and still going on..loved the Michael Winner story ;).

The whole gig takes you to many hours of watching and listening and it's for the most super interrested freaks & geeks of LZ, It's super well documented and presented in such a nice way -personal and subjective-you gotta love it...or surely don't :)  I did. And I was talking about ot to all the guys I met and thought they can relate. So I thought this is a better way to present it and share it here. Just for the sake of music...

Thank you Jose for your passion, dedication and hard work, it was a pleasure (and a pain:) and a blast to watch and re-remember all and learn more....The song Remains the Same !!!!

RIP Dan McCafferty (Nazareth)

 I saw Dan McCafferty twice with Nazareth. In Bucharest.

Then I saw them once more without him (2018). It sucked. 

Though Dan was so frail, his throat singing was so great. Hair of the Dog if it bit 1000 times...He was 76, Retired (or?) from Nazareth in 2013. Too much Razmatazzz :()

they played Sala Sporturilor in Brasov in the early nineties (the first ofem all coming). a buddy of mine tried to give them palinca upfront....wild...

This is the pic I took in February 2012 at Hard Rock Cafe in Bucharest.. I think he was on coke but hey. he did a great gig.

RIP Jerry Lee Lewis

”The Killer” is gone....The last of the only ones...Jerry Lee Lewis was 87...(born Sept. 29 1935) 

There was a hoax news about his death 3 days ago but now it is official :(

Saw him in Brasov at Cerbul de Aur / The Golden Stag in Brasov in a fantastic performance in 1993.

DocȘ Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind is the documentray by Ethan Coen that premiered in 2022 in Cannes film festival. He was not present there.

Lewis's publicist Zach Farnum said: "He was there at the beginning, with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and the rest, and watched them fade away one by one till it was him alone to bear witness, and sing of the birth of rock'n'roll."

Nicknamed the Killer, he has been described as "rock n' roll's first great wild man and one of the most influential pianists of the 20th century.

LMA Bob Dylan @80 !!!!

Bob Dylan is 80 today ! Amazing !!! Unbelievable ! Forever Young ! Are you Younger than that now ? Nah ? Why bother ? The times were a changing into the hellish worse, so why ?  Only another songwriter/hero/poet in the same league made it over 80,  and that was Leonard Cohen.  Well, Eric Burdon just got 80 this year too (May 11) and Tom Jones (last year in June) but they ain”t Bob or Lenny :)..

Last year I posted about Murder Most Foul, his dark poem on the death of JFK and lots else ramblings, and that was that. That is amazing, yes dudes it is !

A lot of my friends don't dig Dylan, the voice, the whining, the this the that. Well, as i told em, buzz off. Now, more than ever, leave me alone (und they did ;(

Bob is Bob, Bob is unique ! A poet, a pirate, a bootleger, a great promoter of his own enigma. Nobel and Oscar, too yep ! Took me many years to love him at his best, understand and care for his riddles, not take him seriously when he's at his most cryptical joker.  

He's been there all my life (OK, not when I was ten), but big over 35 years. Saw him in Frankfurt, missed him in Prague (missed the plane MF :(), came twice to Bucharest, was there but never met him face 2 face, bought his albums everywhere, read about him in Uncut where he was their absolute hero, argued and promoted him everywhere (DocandRoll par ex, No Direction Home, the 4 hr doc on him by Scorsese). And then there is the Rolling Thunder Revue by Scorsese on Netflix, one of the latest works on film on him (and it's great) !

planned to celebrate him on Doc and Roll fest with GIMME DANGER doc and still do, but in November. Meanwhile he shows up in Danny Fields doc, Danny Says, and recently he penned the movie GOLD's main song from the soundtrack, a great song composed together with Daniel Penberton, Danger Mouse and Stephen Gaghan (the director).  Great song !

Cea de-a treia ediție a DOC AND ROLL va avea loc între 11 și 17 aprilie, în Brașov, la Cinemateca Patria și la Clubul Rockstadt.
DOC AND ROLL este un festival de film documentar de muzică în cadrul căruia vor fi proiectate filme documentare și biografice, plus concerte tematice.
După 2 ani de experimentări, primul în 2 zile, al doilea în 3D, ne-am extins la o săptămână întreagă, în care vrem să scoatem Brașovul din astenia de primăvară și să îl ținem conectat în ritm de rock and roll.
Tema principla a celei de a treia ediții este Clubul 27, “clubul” damnat al muzicienilor geniali care au murit la 27 de ani. Documentare și filme biografice despre ei, legendă, mit și și moștenire artistică: Robert Johnson, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse vor fi prezenți și omagiați pe ecran la Cinemateca Patria și sonor la Rockstadt, clubul oficial al festivalului. Aici vor cânta blues prietenii noștri locali de la Fernet Blues Company și vor poposi clujenii de la Lună Amară.
Omagiile noastre rock’n’roll se vor adresa și unor giganți dispăruți recent, Lemmy de la Motorhead, cu un concert al trupei tribut Motorace din Bulgaria, și lui David Bowie, acest extraterestru muzical. Sâmbătă e o zi specială, ziua Pink Floyd, cu filmele The Wall, varianta live a lui Roger Waters și un concert cu excelenta trupă tribut Speak Floyd. Scena românească va fi cu acoperită de un eveniment inedit, documentarul Balta Albă, premieră într-un festival, în prezența regizorului Silviu Munteanu, un film despre generațiile de muzicieni crescute în cartierul bucureștean, urmat de un concert cu unul din exponenții săi, Partizan acustic !

Born to Raise Hell !!!

The Killmeister, LEMMY implinise 70 de ani de Craciun ! De citeva ori i-am adresat un funny LMA pe blog, declarind Craciunul oficial Lemmy Day ! La 2 zile dupa Craciun si dupa 70 de ani Lemmy a fost diagnosticat cu un cancer galopant, si s-a dus Fast and Loose :(

Anul acesta a declarat ca a lasat whisky-ul (devenit Jack Daniels and Coke) si a trecut pe ceva mai sanatos...vodka orange. Lemmy era si diabetic si avea destule probleme de sanatate dar asta nu l-a impiedicat sa cinte pina la capat. Odata cu moartea lui se duce o epoca, de adevarat aur, solid gold, si unul din cei mai carismatici hellraiseri din gen, cei mai simpatici, prieten cu toata lumea, legenda Lemmy ! A inceput ca roadie pentru Jimi Hendrix si a fost basistul trupei Hawkwind, pina ce a format Motorhead in 1975. Povestea Motorhead a durat 40 de ani, si 22 albume de studio, ultimul  fiind Bad Magic, la final de august a.c. Ultima piesa de pe disc este un cover dupa Sympathy for The Devil, cu Brian May la chitara.

Tot anul acesta Lemmy a aparut in filmul punk mut (!!!) Gutterdammerung, care inca nu a iesit.
In 2010 Lemmy a aparut intr-un excelent documentar despre el, pe care l-am vazut la Cannes intr-o bahica vizionare, alaturi de autorii sai, Greg Olliver si Wes Orshoski. Vrem sa il aducem la Doc and Roll al treilea, ca un omagiu lui Lemmy, alaturi de un concert tribut Motorhead, in aprilie 2016 la Brasov.

L-am vazut pe LEMMY cu MOTORHEAD de 4 ori, Prima oara in Germania, apoi in Bulgraia la Kavarna, si de 2 ori la Bucuresti, ultima data la OST FEST in 2012. Pozele si CLIPURILE mele AICI

Pentru orice rocker sau pasionat de muzica si all things rockland moartea lui Lemmy este moartea anului 2015 ! Un final de an atit de  trist dar cei 70 de ani ai lui herr Kilmister fac cit 700 ai altora. Multi din prietenii mei, fani Motohead would agree ;)
