- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2014PROs:
- Solid Construction, made of hardened plastic
- Includes straps for both transmitter and receiver; came with a nice padded carry case
- Includes two cables for wired connection to flash gun or studio lights, and adapter for mini to larger studio lights trigger
- Came with batteries, included
- Works for my Canon 580exII and Promaster 7500DX
- On/Off switch is available for better power management
- 8 selectable channels; range to be tested still
- Convenient test button on transmitter for flash test triggering
- Useful "all channel" trigger; will come in handy
- Status light provides connectivity and availability information
- Flashmount on receiver is integrated to case with walled strain relief; definitely helps for durability
- Surprisingly, the transmitter can change orientation from upright to horizontal, parallel to lens; simple but a nice feature
CONs:
- A bit heavy; should consider using AAA batteries instead of AA
- Plastic is slippery to the feel; should consider a more dull or tactile finish for better handling
- Footing of receiver is plastic; should consider metal footing instead for durability
Verdict: Not perfect but quite a surprising trigger that's affordable and exhibits good value. A definite great buy!
Update 7/7/2014: I used the triggers at a simple shoot and they worked fine. However, if your flash goes to standby or sleep mode, remote triggering is not possible. I had to turn off/on the flash before normal triggering returns. For now, you may want to change that custom function on the flash so that it is on "always" during a shoot. The Phottix Ares manual does not mention this minor detail.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2013This is a basic radio flash trigger. Turn it on, make sure the transmitter and receiver are on the same channel, and it just works. It syncs my setup (Sony Nex-6, Nikon SB-800) at 1/250 second or slower. At 1/320, there's a little fall-off. There's a test button on the transmitter. The receiver is flat so it doesn't add height to the flash or un-balance it on a small table-top stand. The transmitter fits on the hot shoe, and can be swiveled vertical or horizontal, as you like it. 10 channels, very easy to change. The transmitter can trigger any single channel, or all channels. It comes with several cords so the receiver can trigger flashes with 1/8" or PC, rather than a hot shoe. It also comes with a lanyard (for hanging the xmitter around your neck when doing test firing?) and a nice little padded nylon case that fits xmitter and receiver.
Be aware that this is a simple trigger. It won't allow you to do TTL metering, or change the power of remote flashes or zones from the transmitter. But, that's exactly what it's supposed to be. It works well, is priced fairly, and is solidly built.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2014Purchased this item along with the Phottix Ares Set Wireless Trigger (Black) to be able to use multiple flashes off camera. This was recommended by a photographer teaching a speedlight seminar where I was able to test the system and its functionality. Using these devices with multiple photographers in the same room was interesting. Each photographer used a different channel and were able to take pictures without being impacted by each other trying to use flashes.
The flashes linked to this wireless system fire every time without delay. They are not capable of high speed sync on flashes.
Additionally, the receivers come with sync cables so that you can plug them into a sync port on the flash. This was very helpful to allow me to push the speedlight head into a softbox as close as possible without this transmitter getting in the way. You can also purchase Velcro strips/tabs and use them on the flash and receiver so that there is no need to attach the flash to the hot shoe of the receiver.
If the use of the hot shoe mount is desired, rest assured that the receiver locks down tightly with its wheel, although it can be a slight struggle to loosen it when done, even with the grooves, for my larger fingers. This is why I chose to use Velcro and the sync cables instead.
Using these in the studio and outside has been far more successful than infrared transmitters where external light or light diffusers block/interfere with line of sight.
Lastly, these devices take AA batteries which are easy to find anywhere as opposed to some of the competitors that use specialty batteries which makes it hard if the batteries die on you.
I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for inexpensive way to get into wireless flash firing.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2014I tried this product before the yongnuo and aperture products. This one is big, solid and simple. As a result, I went back and picked up a couple more. This is a frighteningly simple flash trigger. One is a dedicated transmitter and the other is a dedicated receiver. The hot shoe locks are very nice, it takes AA batteries and is really user friendly. I shot an event using one transmitter and 2x receivers on a Nikon SB-700 and SB-910. They did not misfire. This is a heck of a product for the money and as a simple flash trigger is desirable because I don't have to think to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Already love this.
I bought this based on a comment on the LeicaRumors website.
Having spent the afternoon shooting with this, I'm really pleased with it.
In terms of camera equipment, I've tried it with both a Leica mirrorless camera and a Nikon DSLR, and both worked perfectly. In terms of lights, I used a Nikon SB700 and a Leica SF64, both configured in manual mode, and neither missed a beat.
I wasn't expecting TTL, and if you want TTL then this is not the trigger to buy.
The range is impressive - it triggered into a different room without line of sight. In terms of ease of use, it couldn't be easier: insert batteries, switch on and then select a channel. The test button on the transmitter is easy to access and handy when using a light meter, such as a Sekonic FlashMate.
What I wanted was a budget way to get my flash off camera and make use of my existing speed lights with the Leica camera, and so far I'm extremely happy that this is the right solution for me.
One thing to note: it does not come with the required four AA batteries. So make sure that you've some to hand.
It's early days, but I see no reason not to give this a 5* review: it's worked flawlessly so far, never missing a shot in the few hundred I went through this afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo prodotto, oltre ogni migliore aspettativa.
Complimenti a Phottix!
