Granite Ware Covered Preserving Canner with Rack, 12-Quart
Home canning is an economical way to preserve fresh foods while retaining their vitamins and nutrients. The right equipment is essential to ensure a quality product and Granite Ware offers all the basics for blanching produce for the freezer or for cold pack canning . A porcelain surface with durable steel core provides great heat distribution, saving time and energy. The wire rack makes lifting jars easy, and is collapsible for quick storage. Granite Ware water-bath canners have been the standard for over 100 years. The stepped design produces even heat by allowing more boiling water to contact the tops of the jars, raising food temps. above 212°F, killing bacteria found in high acid foods. Water-bath canners create a vacuum seal when the jars cool, sealing out air and bacteria. This allows you to safely store preserves, jellies, pickles, relishes, salsas, chilies and more, without refrigeration. Canning is also a great way to create unique, personalized gifts for family and friends.

Too short for large cans and arrived damage

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2023Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseI make rhubarb jam and mint jelly every year at the beginning of June. I was using a large pot to boil my 8oz jars. I had to line the bottom of the pot with a dish towel. This was annoying but most canning pots were too large and too heavy for 7 or 8 8oz jars. Then I searched Amazon and read all the reviews. This canning pot is ideal for my use. If you use larger jars, quart size etc. you will need a larger one. Water gets displaced if the jars are bigger and will boil over. This one is just right for my purposes. I bought the jars from Amazon also…cheapest around.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2009Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseI made my first batch of organic, low-sugar blueberry jam in half-pint jars, and this canner worked perfectly. The jam is fabulous. I made six little jars. I'd never made jam before and it was great fun and really easy.
You can make wonderful, low-sugar jam with Pomona's Universal Pectin ([...]). I learned about this online and found the pectin at our local PCC market; you might find it at your local co-op. I only used one cup of organic cane sugar and the jam has a really balanced sweetness.
I would not use this steam canner for canning low-acidified vegetables, however. From book sources and posts I've read, a pressure canner is safer for processing low-acidified vegetables to ensure that harmful bacteria is destroyed.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2018Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseArrived in great condition. Used it the next day to make a small batch of Relish. The 12 quart canner is just the right size for small batches. Five half pint jars will fit fairly close together. Sits well on the burner without contact with the stove surface like my large canner does. Water didn't take as long to heat up either. Everything looks just as good after first use. The only thing is the edges of the pot and lid are a bit on the sharp side, but I don't really notice that except when washing and drying. Overall, I'm very happy with this canner and expect to be using it much more often than my large one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2019Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseSo, first one I received had enamel chipped off on the lid and top lip of the pot. Sent for a replacement. 2nd one had enamel chipped off on the lid but not the pot. "Okay close enough" I thought. "I have canning to do I can't keep fiddling around.
Went ahead and made pickles in pint jars (Ball) There was enough space to boil water with them totally covered. Worked ok. Had enough that I decided to go ahead and try to do a couple quart jars. NOPE.
The quart jars are too tall for this canner. Do not believe anyone who tells you otherwise. The jars "fit" but there is not enough height in the canner to boil water with auarts, at least the Ball Jars I used are too tall for this canner. Unless you have some weird brand quart jars, don't kid yourself buy the taller canner.
Works fine for pints and smaller. Wouldn't gift because they don't seem able to ship one without chips.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2018Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseI was reluctant to order this item because of negative reviews but not much choice out there. I am happy with the pot. It arrived in perfect condition, no dents or dings. Seven (7) regular pint jars fit in the rack, if you have less than that they are secure if placed evenly around, no problems with tilting. With pint jars there was no problem with having enough water to cover the jars by 2" and it did not boil over or "spit". I seldom use a boiling water canner for quarts but I set a quart jar in the pot and it looks like you could easily cover a qt. jar with water also. I think 4 quarts would be the maximum number to do at one time and you would really need to use a round cooling rack in the bottom of the pot or a folded tea towel (which I have done many times and works quite well, have never had a broken jar).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2024Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseThis is the only kind of canner I'll use. It's a classic. The price was very good compared to my local stores.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2022Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseThis item is a typical enamel on steel product and the quality is what one would expect for the price.
I bought this item based on the specs, which are also on the label that came with the product. The specs indicate that the canner will accept 4 quart jars and 7 pint jars. 4 quart jars will fit in the circumference of the pot. One would think that it would be safe to assume that you would have enough room to also process the jars in a typical water bath. Wrong. I bought the 12 qt canner. one cannot process quart jars in this unit. Quart jars protrude above the top of the rim of the pot, so it would be impossible to process quart jars below the water level. I first used this item for pint jars, and just barely had enough room to cover the jars with water and process them.
Fortunately I have a stainless steel pot that is deeper and can fit the wire rack in so I can process both quart and pint jars. Very disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2019Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseThis is a perfect size for me. It fits on my 2 burner stovetop. I can can items I grow in pots on my patio. And I can use it for a ton of other activities where I need a larger pot. I love the look of the enameled metal and all the extra canning items fit neatly inside it for storage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good pot with a well designed rack
Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseI used the pot for the first time today, I have to say it does the job quite well. It holds six 500 ml (1 pint) jars easily, I didn't try seven. The rack has a contour design that allows the handles to rest on the edge of the pot with the basket part-way out of the water - a nice feature. It makes loading and unloading the jars a breeze.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will do well for many years of canning
Color: BlackSize: 12-QuartVerified PurchaseCanner came to me with no dents or imperfections, and it's worked great so far for canning! Wish that the rack had dividers for between jars, but I knew what I was buying. Great product!
