Cool little product
I'm getting too old to lug a heavy tripod. I saw a Scott Kelby video where he was raving about how he used a Platypod Ultra on a European trip and I thought "I'm headed to Europe so let me check it out" . At it's core it's a metal plate with a 1/4" stud. But it's a really well thought out metal plate with numerous screw holes for various placement of the "legs", holes for a carabiner, cut outs so it can be clipped to a belt and more. I'm using a Manfrotto ball head and this has no problem holding my Canon 7D with EF 24-105 F4L IS. I tried an EF 70-200 F2.8L IS mkII and it required a bit of balancing act but it held. I'm sure if I used the included cinch strap I'd have no issue using this with a big lens. (obviously lighter lenses are no problem). I love the design of the included screw in "legs" One end is spiked for use on hard surfaces or to secure in dirt. The other side of the legs are rubber feet for use on wood floors or table tops, etc. So Far I've only played with this locally but can't wait to travel with it and put it to real use.One mod I did make was to put little peel-n-stick pads on the underside so I'm not concerned about placing the plate on a table or car without installing the legs. just convenience for me.One thing I'd like to see from the manufacturer is for the little case that holds the legs to also have a strap or velcro to hold the cinch strap so all the accessories can be carried together.

Absolutely love this product! I am not a fan of tripods. I hate carrying them around and they’re bulky and cumbersome. I bought this before a trip to upstate New York and it was fantastic! For well in my bag. Didn’t take up room and was quick and easy to setup and use. I don’t think I’ll ever use a regular tripod again!

Using it with a Fuji X-T2 and it works perfectly; very steady, no movement. For now I'm taking my Acratech Ball Head off my Manfrotto tripod and screw it on my Platypod. The Platypod is a great addition for my kit as I hike several miles to shoot landscapes. Rather take an extra lens or two than haul my tripod. The Ultra works great for any of my Fujinon lenses with my X-T2.

The Platypod Ultra comes in great packaging to help you forget that you just spent $60 on a small sheet of metal with holes in it. It includes a set of sharp, spiked feet with lock nuts, and wobbly rubber feet on the opposite ends. The spikes are too sharp to leave attached to the Platypod and put in your camera bag, and when removed, they will not fit in the included nylon case unless you twist the lock nuts all the way back to the rubber feet, making taking the spikes on and off of the Platypod and stowing them unnecessarily slow. When using the rubber feet down instead of the spikes, the spiked ends poke up through the Platypod like punji sticks, waiting to impale your hand or camera.

The best thing about the Platypod Ultra are the 3d party accessories Platypod told me to buy in order to use it. The suggested small Benro Single Action Ball Head with a Swiss Arca quick release is excellent. And the L-Plate Bracket I had to buy to shoot vertically ("portrait" orientation) has been great. Bringing the total cost of the Platypod up to $120, or as much as an actual fully equipped travel tripod (such as the MeFOTO Backpacker ), one that is more than just a small piece of metal with holes in it and bolts for feet.

I did use the Platypod successfully. The spiky feet were secure, but way too damaging to use on many surfaces, and the rubber feet were not stable. So I wound up using round head brass bolts from a hardware store instead. And I use only three of them, like a tripod, instead of four like a chair - there is an extra threaded hole to allow you to do do this. There is a reason we use tripods instead of quad pods. With three legs you never have one that has to be adjusted up or down to keep the tripod from being wobbly. If you use four feet on the Platypod you will have to adjust the height at least one leg *every time* you use it on a different surface or it will wobble like a table that needs a leg shimmed.

The Platypod is sturdier than my Joby tripods. With the Joby tripods, if **any** of the multiple links in the legs is loose, you are SOL if you are taking time exposures. However, the Joby tripods pack better than the Platypod with it's sharp spiky legs. With short brass bolts for legs, the Platypod packs better, but is still an awkward shape.

I've used the larger Platypod Max for a while now and its great for mounting studio lights to. But it's large and heavy.

This new smaller Platypod is great for keeping with you all the time.

    Great product.

I've been wanting to get a Platypod Ultra for a while, but have been debating as to whether it would be something I would use. It's been fun to use and useful for getting shots I otherwise wouldn't. There have been a few situations so far in just the few weeks since I received it that I've gotten that really low angle I've been looking for and have not gotten until now. I've used it in the high school gym for a different perspective on basketball games, and at the beach to prop the camera on rocks to get a lower perspective when shooting sunsets. I like that it can be hooked to the belt loop of my pants with the carabiner. It is a very sturdy product and I look forward to using it in all sorts of places, particularly venues where tripods and monopods are prohibited.

The product came as advertised. While I chose the "ultra" model which was for mirrorless and other smaller cameras, I have a full sized DSLR (Canon 5D Mk IV). It was fully functional even with my 70-200mm lens. I intend to use for travel where tripods are not permitted (i.e. churches, etc.). I fully recommend.
