The Dictionary of Demons: Names of the Damned Paperback – October 8, 2010

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 748 ratings

The Dictionary of Demons starts with a simple premise: names have power. In medieval and Renaissance Europe, it was believed that speaking a demon's true name could summon it, compel it, and bind it.

Occult scholar Michelle Belanger has compiled the most complete compendium of demonic names available anywhere, using both notorious and obscure sources from the Western grimoiric tradition. Presented alphabetically from Aariel to Zynextyur, more than 1,500 demons are introduced, explored, and cross-referenced by theme and elemental or planetary correspondence. This meticulously researched reference work features fascinating short articles on demonology and a wealth of woodcuts, etchings, and paintings depicting demons through the ages.

This book was so extensive and thorough on all the things I was looking for. I'm not an expert by any means but it has everything I was looking for at the time so it was great 👍

There is not a lot to say about this fantastic book that has not already been said. I have been collecting books lately about demons to help me in my writing, and this is a great resource. I haven't read it front to back, but I'm sure that was not what the writer intended for you to do.

I have flipped through it quite a lot, and when I catch a name that sounds interesting I read that article. Most entries do recommend others to read to further round out your knowledge of that particular demon. So before you know it you've been browsing this for an hour.

My only problem is, as mentioned in some other reviews, this book pretty much sticks only to demons with proper names. There are a few entries in regards to authors of demonic lore as well as important books in demonic history (The author mentions this in the introduction.)

I'll keep this short and sweet and say I highly recommend this. Whether you believe in this sort of thing or not, it is incredibly interesting.

this book is kick ass. it should become the next Necromincom or whatever that one that didn't exist but after over a century of existance it still does and man can it be pricey. Regardless, this book is an impressive piece of work and my compliments to the author, editors and publishers. I was a history major and I love to write on top of that. These days you rarely see the melding of english being used correctly throughout, proper grammar and proper use of our language to discuss just about evrey demon and related tradesperonnel that you can imagine. Very well researched, also put together and some one else finishes it off. Get it, I can guarantee you'll be using it sooner than you think. Thanks so much, glad to see you home safely. I'm headed back home now. thanks

The Dictionary of Demons: Names of the Damned by Michelle Belanger is one of the best detailed works of its kind. It lays out in an easy to follow guide on the infernal names of demons and the art and images are amazing. The side articles are both informative and precisely placed, offering additional facts on demonology from medieval and Renaissance Europe, without breaking up the flow of the primary content of the tome. A very hefty 384 page volume, it is a must have on the subject for anyone's library on religion, the paranormal and the macabre. I highly recommend this book as one of the best to be written on the subject!

Whoa!! Bought it for no reason cause it was listed as an item often bought with the Grimorium Verum- itself something I purchased as not knowing what it was. Purposely read nothing about either one before I ordered it. Totally. Impressed. Ms. Belanger looks a little, um, odd (read:hilarious) and some people (at least me) might find it off-putting that she's a "vampire", but she did a Godsdamned excellent job on this joker right here. Serious must buy for anybody with an interest in the subject. The entries provide a nice amount of info, and it's not written by someone with obvious stikindabut syndrome- meaning that it's pretty readable for being an encyclopedia. If nothing else you'll probably find some interesting stuff to follow up on, at least as a beginner. Mega impressed, and I'm super cereal about that.

Underwhelmed, I got this book on out of pure curiosity, expecting it to enlighten me with its provided understanding of demons’ origins and agendas if you will. And maybe debunk some hubbub and stigma around demons. I have a general interest in occult subject matter and neutral feelings about demons. After the introduction which to me was the most interesting and through part of the book, with intervals of depth. The format in the end hurt it more than it helped it in terms of disgest-ability. It does reference other occult theologies. I couldn’t help but feel it was lacking on the demons descriptions they were very brief, although I did enjoy the sparse but detailed illustrations and historical documents. As well as the the infernal correspondence at the end, which I much preferred to the rest of the books formatting, short and sweet. It is what it is, a alphabetical list of the author’s chosen demons that do form somewhat of a clearer picture of the ancient taboo and havoc reeking demons.

After unsuccessfully trying to track down a similar book I once owned from the early 1900's (Levi-Strauss, Encyclopedia of the Occult) I reluctantly purchased Belanger's, Names of the Damned. I was afraid it would be full of overly dramatic descriptions, unnecessary flowery language and unfounded claims, which so many contemporary 'occult' books are. Sadly, even dictionaries and encyclopedias in this area are rife with the author's opinion (which would be laughable in something like geology or biology).

To my delight, it is a true dictionary. It simply bases all the descriptions on previously established texts! As a massive bonus Belanger gives you the author, authority, text source or search-word as available for each entry!

I like Michelle Belanger's other works too, and this is no less thorough. She went to a lot of trouble to make this a great book, to tell as much as possible of the attributes of each of more than 1,500 demons. I am a demonolator, and this book is more than helpful. I have spoken to over 100 demons since getting this book, and every one of them has answered me politely-- and of course I take a respectful approach to them. I think demons are very misunderstood.

The pictures, woodcuts etc. in this book are also excellent. If you somehow need to know the names of a lot of demons, for whatever reason, this is a great resource material. Thanks Michelle, for another great book!

Before purchasing this book I did a lot of research on Michelle Belanger and one of the things I admire the most is the hard work she puts into her own research and for that reason alone I knew it would be worth the purchase. I wasn’t disappointed it’s a great book for my collection.
