About the Author

Ismita Tandon is an award-winning poet and author. She graduated from Sophia College, Ajmer and went on to pursue an MBA degree. Ismita has published three novels, one with Penguin and two with HarperCollins. She shares her poems regularly on her Facebook page, A Lesser Known Poet. She’d thought she was done writing books as her love for poetry far exceeded her desire to write. Her stint at the Om Swami ashram led her to lead a more spiritual life, compelling her to pen down this book. When not scribbling poems, she spends time with her black lab, Benoo, who much like Ismita, loves vegetarian food and a siesta.

Swami Vidyananda Om grew up in Bangalore. After spending time at an ashram in Bangalore and in Rishikesh, he found his guru in Om Swami. Swami Vidyananda is Om Swami’s foremost disciple and was initiated in the tradition of Sri Vidya. An unusually talented singer, Swami Vidyananda is devoted to Swamiji. He lives in Sri Badrika ashram in Himachal in the service of Sri Hari. Swami Vidyananda enjoys singing for Bhagwan and loves eggless cakes.

    Vidyananda's story: Content here is gold for any seeker! If you are on path of mantra sadhana, you will realize parallels to what a being in the league of Saptarishi is capable of through multiple stories.
    Few Highlights: Sri Badrika Ashram would be known as Mukti kshetra in future. All jagrata vidyas that Om swami knew were consecrated in the Sri Hari idol present in the Ashram. Well, there is a version of Vishnu Sahasranama that we common people don't know about.
    Low point: Guruji tear down his Sadhana notes because he finds no sadhaka is ever capable of the level of intensity of the being those notes capture.

    Ismita Tandon's version:
    Several Satvik beings get stuck several life times because they build deep relationships with chronic people thinking they will save them. Usual life lesson is that the actual Satvik being regress in their evolution at the end of the day. Ismita presents herself as a soul needing reformation & Om Swami does it in style. Mind you, never try to imitate Om Swami in real life. However, through multiple stories Ismita unfolds her fine grained perception capabilities & there is more to her than the initial character depiction she made of herself.
    Low point: She didn't establish very well why she deserves Om Swami's grace. Although she leaves hints of deep devotion & past life connections.

    Overall, I think i will read this multiple times

    This seems to be a book written by the first-in-line aides of Om Swamiji. Gives a glimpse of what it was like back in the days when they first began close association - the transformative capacity and the love of the Divine Om swamiji comes through fervently. Two parts to this book.
    The first one is written by a lady who in difficult times, ended up receiving the help and support of Swamiji and turned her life around. This part has a lot of I-Me-Myself going on, self absorbed and self centered vision, combined with a bubbly, sometimes cloying way of writing. Makes for interesting reading nonetheless.
    The second part of the book is by a Sishya Swami. This part is grounded. Hardly verbose but manages to convey the struggle of not finding the right direction. Then the relief when one's Nija Guru holds hand. The episode of Sri Bala Tripurasundari, was so real and runs in my mind often. Truly wish Om Swamiji would grant me a vision of Sri Balambika. Hari Om Tat Sat.

    A very interesting read for those who are curious to know more about Swamiji. I personally like the second half by Swami Vidyanana then the first half as it had more substance for me. This is just my personal choice and their could be a bias as well being a Shakta worshipper. I could completely connect to certain parts of it. The first part by Sadhavi Vrinda was informative but too overly sentimental and repetitive.

    This book is an epitome of devotion with striking contrasts, a city girl, nowhere close to being spiritual or religious and a young boy who left on his spiritual quest in his early teens. How they happen to meet Swamiji and then how their lives transform under Swamiji’s umbrella of love.

    But have no confusion, this book is not about them. It is about Swamiji and only Him. Our Humble and Divine lord, rarely talks about Himself. How is He like in person, how does He talk to people close to Him, how has He healed various lives?, what's His day like at the Ashram?, What does He eat?, How sensitive He is? How Swamiji can read our thoughts or more so plant one in our brains, A glimpse into His infinite and mystical powers. You will be teary eyed if not drenched in tears to know of a Saint from close quarters who is no less than God and lives among us in flesh and bones.

    The day to day events at the Ashram, how it got constructed from a mud cottage to a few rooms and the temple that is there now are beautifully narrated, woven with threads of devotion and mysticism. I will always come back to reading the description of the consecration of Shri Hariji and how Swamiji infuses life into Shri Hariji sculpted in black stone (Prana Pratishtha). Although I was present in the temple during the consecration ceremony back in 2014, I came to know so many things only after reading this book. Vidya Swamiji shares his experience of how he meets MAA and how he comes to know who Swamiji is. Mesmerizing.
    Not everyone is lucky or I should say blessed enough to know and be in Swamiji's presence and have all the experiences that Ismita and Vidya Swamiji had. But what we all have is This BOOK, which makes us relive those experiences that the authors had with Swamiji. As you read through you will feel that you are them and Swamiji is with you and you are not just reading a book, but living it, breathing it.

    It is not a regular feat to uncover yourself to the whole world, your deep dark secrets and share with everyone your heart out in the most innocent way, share the one thing that you swear by in your life - Swamiji. Yes, Swamiji is the center of the lives of both Ismita and VidyaSwamiji and perhaps many others. But how many could share it out with the world honestly and with truthfulness. I can't. But they have. The impeccable narration of the glories of Swamiji will make you eager to walk on a spiritual quest yourself. It is as if the devotion in their words is infectious, it made me cry out for the lord.

    I can't stress enough to please pick up this book and give it a read. So many myths shrouding devotees, their behaviours towards our Lord- Swamiji, towards each other and in general will be erased. And a subtle calmness will reign your being, a sense of satisfaction. You will be at peace.

    Above all, I am deeply in gratitude for Ismita and VidyaSwamiji to pen down the many facets of our Swamiji in plain literature which is a simple yet intriguing read from start to finish. If anything reading this book will be a gesture of gratitude towards both the exceptionally beautiful souls, who have made their humble attempt of expressing the glories of Swamiji and in turn helping us purify ourselves and our devotional sentiments not just towards Swamiji but towards other devotees as well.

    This is a heartfelt tribute to Om Swami by two people who have known him from close quarters. It makes for very interesting reading. It was good to see Om Swami as a compassionate person who feels the pain of others and can literally see through people's minds. That was a bit scary though, the mind reading part! I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to see the guru from a personal point of view, to get to know him better, and not only from a distance as an adviser in times of need.
