The Prairie Table: Suppers, Potlucks & Socials: Crowd-Pleasing Recipes to Bring People Together: A Cookbook Hardcover – Illustrated, May 21, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Karlynn Johnston, beloved blogger behind The Kitchen Magpie, knows first-hand that meals made with love--cooked with comfort in mind, and filled with real ingredients--are greeted with the biggest smiles. In The Prairie Table, she captures the magic of families crowded around the kitchen table; of social gatherings, with picnic benches groaning under the weight of a multitude of dishes; of food eaten in wide-open spaces under sunshine-filled blue skies.
Featuring more than 100 recipes--from salads to vegetable dishes; home-baked breakfasts to easy main meals; crowd-pleasing appetizers to portable desserts; a chapter dedicated to the Ukrainian heritage of the prairies, and much more!--The Prairie Table is filled with Karlynn's approachable and tasty dishes. Paired with gorgeous photography and candid stories, every recipe in this book can easily be cut in half for a smaller family meal or doubled for a large event, and there are even quick "cheater" recipes for when you are in a hurry. You can then complement each dish with the array of cocktails and mocktails featured in the final chapter of the book, written by special guest and popular Kitchen Magpie contributor, Karlynn's husband Mike (aka Mr. Kitchen Magpie).
Whether it's Grandma Ellen's Cold Picnic Barbecue Fried Chicken, perfect for a hot summer day; Sweet and Sour Meatballs to bring to your community potluck; Mango, Avocado, and Arugula Salad that even the pickiest of eaters will love; Piña Colada Sour Cream Squares for unexpected visitors; or pitcher-friendly cocktails like Strawberry Rhubarb Gin Fizz, The Prairie Table brings quintessential prairie cooking to kitchens everywhere.

The recipes you will find in this book are what we eat as a family, what we feed our guests at our home, and what we take to gatherings. Whether a salad or vegetable dish, home-baked bun or easy main meal, every recipe in this book is easily cut in half for a smaller family meal or doubled for a large event—even the cocktails (though why you’d want to cut cocktails in half escapes me). I also wanted every recipe in this book to be useful week in and week out, to make your life easier.
You can make a full batch of a crowd-pleasing recipe to take to a soiree or to feed your own guests, whether a side dish or a main course. There are kid-friendly recipes for dinners that will also be perfect for potlucks. There are easy dinner recipes such as Slow- Cooker Beef Dips on page 154 that also make perfect leftovers that the entire family can eat for lunch the next day, or freeze them for a later date. My Calico Beans on page 156 might be a go-to potluck dish, but my family eats it twice a month and the kids take it in thermoses for lunches. The salads and vegetable dishes are all sides that you can make any day of the week. The dainties section is perfect for filling up your freezer, to pull out for surprise visitors (so that you have something to serve with coffee!) or the holiday season. There’s nothing like a tray of dainties to get Prairie folks at a party excited!
You’re going to see classics (such as Marion’s perogies (see page 19), which I make in triple batches so I only have to make them once every couple of months) and some fresh new favorites (like the Garlic and Brown Sugar Bacon Pineapple Bites on page 103 that will make you want to throw a tiki-themed party just so that you can serve them).
I’m also bringing my husband, Mike, a.k.a. Mr. Kitchen Magpie, into the cookbook fray. He’s in charge of cocktails in our house and, due to popular demand, he now even has his own section on the Kitchen Magpie website, where he creates cocktails for everyone to enjoy. I heard from a lot (and I mean a LOT!) of you after my first book that I needed to do more cocktails, so there’s an entire chapter of Mike’s cocktails and mocktails at the end of this book just for you.
This is us. This how we eat, this is how I cook for those I love, and, if you will indulge me, this is an entire cookbook’s worth of recipes from my table to yours. I’m so very happy to share these recipes with you.
Love,
Karlynn

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019I already own Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky,so as soon as I knew about this book I preordered it(last November)! This is one GORGEOUS book! The layout is great, and the photos are beautifully done throughout. It has a very "vintage style" to it also, which I absolutely love! I cannot wait to start cooking from it! AMAZING and WELL worth the wait!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2019This wonderful “ down to Earth “ cookbook arrived in my mailbox last week. The recipe for Deviled Eggs is worth the price of the book. It is filled with good old mid-west recipes plus the most delightful photographs. Time to order it’s companion book Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2020Such a good book to sit and browse through. The recipes are old school delicious.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019The Prairie Table features down-to-earth, good 'ol Canadian recipes from the blogger behind the highly successful The Kitchen Magpie. In this cookbook, Karlynn Johnston shares over 100 recipes - from appetizers and main dishes to side dishes, delicious desserts and cocktails (compliments of Mr. Kitchen Magpie). These tasty yet doable recipes will encourage us to share more meals with those we love and remind us of the importance of reconnecting at the end of a busy day.
I immediately enjoyed the personable, friendly feel to Karlynn's writing as she shares the recipes she makes for her own family and big get-togethers. Organized into 8 chapters and with a nostalgic, retro vibe to its colour pictures, Karlynn weaves some of her heritage into the book by dedicating the first chapter to the tasty Ukrainian dishes she grew up on. As a Tater Connoisseur myself, I'm particularly smitten with the section on perogies. Oh .. my .. word. I'm eager to jump into her "Choose Your Own Perogy Adventure" section to learn how to make these wonderful little pillows of awesome.
I tried a couple of the recipes before this review -- my daughter and I made the Cake Mix Cookies (using cherry chip - deelish!) and I'm relieved to know that Karlynn (like myself) is a serious banana hoarder. I am not alone. Phew! Her Banana Gingerbread Loaf was a great way to reduce my cache of frozen 'nanas and it was big time yum. I also plan to make many more recipes including: Beer and Orange-Glazed Salmon, Curried Honey Chipotle Sweet Potatoes, Make-Ahead Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole...
I love that Karlynn's writing and recipes have a casual, homey feel. I'm not one for snooty cookbooks that make me feel bad for not knowing certain hard-to-find ingredients. Her 'down home cook who loves food and family' vibe fits me to a T and I'm sending Karlynn a big High Five for her Cheater recipes. Life is busy and sometimes you have to make a quick meal with a few not-from-scratch ingredients that make life easier. Life's too short for food guilt.
With good tips, a wonderful down-home feel and a great selection of doable recipes, The Prairie Table will get home cooks into the kitchen and eager to share their new culinary skills at family dinners, dinner parties and large potlucks.

2.0 out of 5 stars The comments in this book
This book is very pretty and well photographed. Because the author is Canadian there’s seems to be a lot of recipes that we don’t eat here in the UK. This is good , it’s nice to have the variety.
I’m very put off by the authors comments though. They come across as crass and stereotypical, example include Karlynn writes that her ‘family gatherings are loud, boisterous and always eventful, and they’re full of food and definitely lots to drink ( we are Ukrainian, after all)’ 🙄
Later in the book she writes of her Canadian husband ‘that man will live on meat and potatoes (can you tell he’s Irish or what?) and could go for weeks on end without touching anything green or orange’ 🙄
It’s comments like the above that are really irritating. Karlynn , as an actual Irish person born and bred I can guarantee and confirmto you that YES we Irish are very good at eating our veggies thank you very much.
Twords the end of the book Karlynn says of her husbands homemade cocktails ‘some call it being cheap, I call it my frugal Scottish genes. The other half of me is Irish, which leaves me with a love of Whiskey , a trait that could easily rack up a hefty bar tab’
Not every Scottish person is cheap and not every Irish person is a drunk.
Karlynn are you Canadian, Ukrainian, Scottish or Irish 😂 you seem very confused.
I’m sure there are more of these types of comments but I have not read the entire book. It does look like a nice book but these silly types of comments puts me right off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for a family or Wedding Gift
Beautiful photography, my book has so many pages marked for recipes I will try very soon. I have owned it 5 days and already made a supper my WHOLE family loved, Slow-cooker Beef Dips. The Ukrainian Dishes chapter presents traditional recipes with valuable details and family secret tips - I know we will use these recipes as we teach our kids to prepare Ukrainian dishes! The Borscht recipe mirrors our own beloved version. I think this book would be great for any family and would be a wonderful bridal shower gift as it is a perfect mix of inspiring recipes and classics for daily meals or special gatherings!
