1 - soft pad, but firm enough to write without breaking through the paper
2 - smooth so that writing doesn't have jags
3 - fairly deep level of padding and the lip at the edge pads my arms
4 - holds up well to a cup of hot coffee or soup (some reviews complained of separation after hot items - no issues here)
5 - cleans easily

PROBLEM - Sizing
I tried 3 sizes of this and none of them really fit and were as much as 3/4" different than advertised - seems odd. Ended up keeping the 31.5”x 15.8" version though really need 17" depth. The size offerings from all other companies fit perfectly but were not as nice as this mat.

Seems expensive, but I like it and would probably buy it again for my main desk.

The perfect desk pad - with a little surgery

This desk pad was exactly what I was looking for. Soft touch, classic appearance, front lip. It can be the perfect desk pad, if you're willing to take some risks. Assuming it arrived intact - no creasing or bending in shipping, start off by laying it on the desk for a few days. Let it acclimate, and see if any buckling happens. It probably will, as the soft nonskid underlayer likes to contract, causing the harder top layer to bulge out. This makes an unstable surface for mousepads, keyboards, writing pads, mugs, etc.

If this happens, turn it over. Starting on the side where the pad has bunched up the most on top, cut the flat part of the underlayer INSIDE the stitching. DO NOT CUT THE STITCHING ITSELF or you will separate the two layers of the pad. Continue to score the pad vertically, all the way across. Then flip the pad back over, and very slightly bend the sides up as you place it back down on the desk. The bottom layer should readhere to the tacky adhesive between the layers, with slight gaps relieving the strain that was causing the mat to stop laying flat.

Instructions say not to put anything hot on it, which I haven't, but otherwise I haven't treated it particularly gently. Someone posted that it wasn't sturdy - my experience has been the complete opposite. It's still just like new. I would buy it again in an instant if I needed another one. GREAT PRODUCT.
