Editorial Reviews
Review
“Charity Mathews makes baking with kids a blast for adults and little ones alike. What can often times seem like a daunting, messy task becomes an inspiring, yummy experience where kids take the lead in the kitchen. The results aren't just tasty baked treats, but a new appreciation for their own abilities and the work that goes into cooking food. Cute and cravable photos, easy-to-follow instructions, and brag-worthy results have you wishing for a junior bake in your home every day.”―Andrea Sterling, mom of two kid chefs
“This charming, colorful, made-just-for-kids cookbook is exactly what little foodies need to get started making pies, cakes, muffins, cookies, and more. Author Charity Mathews assumes kids are capable, while also being crystal-clear about when an adult should be summoned, leading to a feeling of empowerment and mastery that will hopefully bleed over into other areas. Moms and dads get to encourage independence―and eat lava cake! Bonus: there's a pep talk for parents at the end to help you through mixing bowl explosions and knife fears.”―Sasha Emmons, editorial director of Today's Parent
“As a busy working mom, I'm constantly trying to find the balance between feeding my twins and dashing out the door to whatever is next on our agenda. Kid Chef Junior Bakes is my secret weapon when trying to prepare a quick, homemade ‘slice of love’ that will keep even my pickiest eater full and satisfied. Charity Mathews has hit another home run with her latest book.”―Leigh Fickling, Type 1 diabetes mom

- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020I bought this for my 7 yo son. We’ve made a few of the recipes. In general, I like this cookbook. Some of the directions are a little confusing, but I bake a lot so I can figure them out. I think it would be difficult for a kiddo to figure them out alone. I also don’t like that the ingredients are on a different page than the directions. We are constantly flipping back and forth. I wish the book was spiral bound so it would lay flat, but that’s a small gripe. Most of my own cookbooks don’t do that either.
I love the large photos and the journal entry spaces (“I first made this on____”. “I made this with _____”). I like how it encourages kids to experiment and customize recipes, and provides space to write down customizations.
I’d buy other books from this series. It’s worth owning for an eager young baker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids!
I bought Kid Chef Junior Bakes: My First Kids Baking Cookbook for my granddaughter’s 5th birthday, hoping it would be a fun way for her to learn to bake with help from her parents. This cookbook is colorful, full of pictures, and easy to follow. I love that it clearly shows what tools are needed and how long each recipe takes to prepare and bake.
As soon as she opened it, she started picking out recipes she wanted to try! It’s a fantastic introduction to baking for young kids and makes learning in the kitchen both exciting and accessible. Highly recommend!
