Thirteen Months In The Himalayas: Chronicles of a Monks Sadhana Hardcover – October 29, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
"If you won’t get Her vision, who will?"
With these words from Bhairavi Ma echoing in his heart, a young monk who had renounced a multimillion-dollar business empire retreated into the Himalayas. For thirteen months, he engaged in intense meditation, seeking the finest reward there is: self-realization.
But what truly unfolded in those serene yet desolate mountains? Faced with biting cold, prowling wild animals, crippling hunger, and overwhelming isolation, Om Swami tested the limits of his mind and body. Struggling to sit in sadhana for hours, he oscillated between moments of transcendent joy and crushing despair. What spiritual practices did he adopt? How did he keep the ‘spark’ of sadhana alive? Were the rituals enough to reach the Divine, or did doubt and fear creep in, even for one so wise?
Thirteen Months in the Himalayas offers a rare and mesmerizing glimpse into Om Swami’s extraordinary journey of self-realization. A sequel to the bestselling If Truth Be Told, it takes you deeper into the heart of a monk’s spiritual practice and his unwavering quest for the Divine.

This book is a great source of inspiration for sincere seekers and a manual for all advanced practitioners.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025Om Swami ji has a beautiful way with words. Whether he writes about his struggles, his successes or his dilemmas, everything works to uplift the reader. I first started listening to his discourses on youtube and then progressed to following his sadhana on the Sadhana App. I can say with confidence that he has been a catalyst in my rediscovering the art of praying to our Gods, the art of aligning the self with the Universe, the subtle art of mindfulness and the humor in our lives. I wish I am blessed enough to meet him in person one day.
Reading 13 Months in the Himalayas was a divine experience. I started reading the book as soon as I received it and I could not put it down. It fills in stories and builds more upon his journey as chronicled in If truth Be Told. I laughed, cried, went through a gamut of emotions and ultimately I feel so so so grateful that a human being of Om Swami's caliber has taken birth in my times and has been devoted to sharing his knowledge and experiences. Om Swami ji is a true Bhakti yogi and reading his words or listening to him always fills my heart with love.
Shree Om Swami ji is the ideal monk, sanatani, and guru. Swami ji ko koti koti pranam.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025Reading this precious gem from Swamiji was an ultimate experience as He takes the reader along with His most arduous journey of discovering His own truth! This book takes one deep into His sadhana, ritual, schedule, struggle and final blissful outcome. Reading the chapter of Maha Vishnu Darshan is so heart warming! This book is kind of handholding for a sadhak into the world of sadhanas. Swamiji has also shared all the mantras, a beautiful hand drawing of Sri Yantra and various notes of His personal sadhana as if the King has opened up His personal treasure for anyone to take whatever one wishes to! Thank you Swamiji, your generosity has no limits and thank you for sharing your wealth of wisdom and sadhana with us! Koti Pranaam to your holy lotus feet! 🙏

“You need to walk the path to see what lies ahead”. - Om Swami.
With that, I won’t leave any spoilers and will say, that this book is a must read! Swamiji’s beautiful journey will bring you a deep yearning and love for the divine that cannot be missed!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025The book is dripping with such intensity of penance! There were times when the energy was so much that I had to stop reading and return after pausing. It is the epitome of what it means to be persistent, devotional, and honest.
I recommend that you read 'If Truth be Told' and this book sequentially to truly grasp the magnanimity of what has been shared. Thirteen months, meanwhile, is more than a chronicle. Every line in the book has been written to add value to what has been shared. There are no detours, no philosophical musings beyond what transpired in the mind and body while undergoing the tapas. And yet, what the book delivers inside you is beyond measure!

Once you start reading, your journey begins in the transidental states and it's hard to come back to the world of heavy dense reality.
May you experience the joy of reading this book and experiance purity of devotion!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024Namaste - I have been a follower of Swami Ji for more than 5 years and have completely surrendered to him. With that in mind, I will try to be as objective as possible but put quite simply - this book is an absolute treasure chest. Swamiji has revealed all that there is to be revealed in his journey towards finding his truth. The level of detail that he has gone into is simply astounding and will serve as a beacon of inspiration for all sadhakas in the present and future for eons to come. Tears welled up in my eyes more than a few times in accompanying Swamiji through his 13 month journey in the Himalayas - the simplicity, heartfelt devotion and the purity with which he achieved what he has, is an ideal for all of us to follow. The reader will find in this book everything that they are looking for if they approach this book with a feeling of surrender.
Note: For new readers, your journey will be enhanced if you were to read "If Truth be Told" first and then follow it up with this.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024"Thirteen Months in the Himalayas" by Om Swami is a Masterpiece that stands beside works like Schubert’s "Serenade" and Shakespeare’s "Hamlet"—a work destined to be read, cherished, and deeply felt for centuries.
This book is far more than a chronicle; it's a profoundly intimate journey, a journal of devotion between a man and the Divine. Through his unwavering dedication, Om Swami invites readers into a rare exploration of the soul's deepest yearnings and doubts, rapture, and eventual transcendence.
In "Thirteen Months in the Himalayas," Om Swami’s achievement mirrors that of the greatest explorers who once circumnavigated the Earth. Before they braved the unknown, the world seemed flat—yet their courage opened it up, forever expanding human knowledge. Similarly, Om Swami is an explorer of the inner realms, revealing a path to the Divine that most may doubt yet can now glimpse through his experiences.
Om Swami’s story reminds us that the path to divine connection is open to us all, if only we have the courage, conviction, and love to walk it. This book is not only a tribute to an extraordinary journey but an invitation to embark on one of our own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read for all seekers
I have so to say tasted this book reading portions of it completely and it has tug at my heart strings and given me hope. If a person younger in biological age to me can do so much austerities, I can at least intensely yearn for the same. A wonderful intimate telling of a young illumined saint's pining for the Divine and the superhuman efforts he put in for realizing successfully the Divine, just 15 years ago. The hardbound format, the language and the font size is handy, pleasing, and comfortable. There is an easy sincere flow in the language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guru, guide and a Role model
What an amazing book Swamiji!
Thank you for sharing your process, experiences and insights from your 13 months stay in the Himalayas.I read each chapter a day and took in slowly what it offered me. How generous and compassionate of you to share your original Sadhana notes and powerful Sri Chakra drawings with your readers.I felt so drawn towards it and found it to be so powerful.Your dedication, determination, resilience and strength in keeping your resolutions is so exemplary.I found it so amusing and relatable to read that if you had called your own biological mother ,she would never make you wait.
The most incredible, breathtaking and heartwarming experience in the book was the chapter 'Storm before the calm' when a peek into your divine vision of Sri Vishnu was given. It filled me with sweetness and gratitude. Your immense love and devotion for bhagwan was palpable. It is so assuring to know that such experience is possible only with relentless sadhana filled with boundless love, devotion and discipline. We are so blessed and fortunate to have access to your grace and wisdom. स्थितोऽस्मि गतसन्देह: करिष्ये वचनं तव is the line that I loved most from the book and wish and pray to live by in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible and unforgettable book (as all of OM Swami Ji's book).
This book electrified my modest aspiration to take up sadhana.
It oozes honesty and simplicity of Swami ji. I have managed it uninterrupted up to chapter 11 and it is so beautifully written. There is so much detail as the chapter progress with Swami's schedule to the minutes. Most of HIS quandaries are so relatable through his journey here and yet HE is not a common man like us.
It reminded me of my professional exam years. It fills one's heart with great admiration as you read upon, how Swami ji undertook the planning, preparation and execution of HIS sadhana so diligently.
HE truly has given this world a detailed blueprint on how to do sadhana. Which was non-existent in the Sanatana Dharma literature so far.
Cannot wait to read the rest of the chapters and especially number 18. On a general note, I always buy 2-3 paper copies of all HIS books. They are a "must have" in ones library.
I did attend the Sri Sukatam Sadhana at his residence amongst 200 + disciples. It was an enchanting experience to perform the yajana beside HIM. However, the book is all together on a different level if seekers are looking for inspiration to take upon sadhana. I feel blessed to have got hold of a copy on Amazon. HE would always hold a special and imperishable place in my heart. 🙇🏻♀️🙏🏼
Part II of my review as I have completed the read. I am sad that it has come to an end. I cannot cherish it any longer like a special Netflix series or a pudding that one looks forward to at the end of a laborious stint (I say stint- as life can offer prolonged, hard, tiring, difficult stints even when money is plentiful 🙏🏼).
Getting back to the book review- The chapters (from 12th one) had gotten more intense with more details and accounts of mantra sadhanas, Swami Ji's experiences and has approach towards anything and everything.
I felt totally convinced that there is so much to gain from that I started a sadhana straight after my return as I seem to have no jet lag 🙏🏼.
A lot of the detail can be found in, The Ancient Science of Mantras and The Gayatri Sadhana book as well. But reading this book after reading the others clarifies the processes more and more for me, plus the Sadhana App.
I am suggesting this "NOT as a promotion for Swami ji's books and Apps propaganda" 🙏🏼 .
I am stating my experience as he quietly adds a lot of details in all his works and one can easily bypass it whilst in the flow of doing a Sadhana. For Swami ji it is lifetimes of experience and it now "seems effortless' but for a novice like me even reading a mantra in english is a lot of effort, let alone following HIS pronunciation.
The chapters are so much like an exceptional biopic with details of Sadhana. Especially the chapter 14. Swami ji also clarifies details like astral travel, celestial music etc. and explains them with a scientific approach. The chapter 18 and 19 (Chop wood, Fetch water) are indescribable. It is not just the journey and attainment but it is what HE did/ does after that. How HE thinks, approaches life and is doing/ will do is so uniquely distinguishable from a 'commoner's" thinker.
This book will for sure change one's "thinking and perspective towards life.
I felt like this when I read "If truth be told" when i bought it on 10/11/2017. I get frustrated, upset, emotional and at times mentally fight with Swami ji 🙇🏻♀️🙏🏼 as he is becoming "inaccessible" but my fondness and plights have intensified ever since.
HIS work has totally changed my thinking process and my demeanour has had a "sizemic shift" too, from early days. HE is "extremely rare, and is for a limited offer only (I believe so) in present day and his books are unalloyed, totally different from Indian religious books. HIS "philosophy of life" is like none other 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. Please make the most whilst HE is in this living form 🙏🏼.

5.0 out of 5 stars The incredible journey of Om Swami
Thirteen months in the Himalayas’ is an amazing book by Om Swami and is a must read for serious seekers. The book is almost like a sadhana diary in which he has accounted every minute of his meditation and sadhana routine and his daily rigorous practices while he was in the Himalayas. For seekers on the spiritual path this book is a must read and the only book required as they can realise that ‘sadhana se sambhav hai’. Attainment is absolutely possible with sadhana.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for Om Swami followers
The most disappointing time when reading this book came at the end where there were only blank page after blank page. I wished it would go on and on.
It’s a must read for his followers. However, things can be improved in the next iteration - I wasn’t a fan of only English translated mantras in the book, the publisher should have followed the earlier Sri suktam’s book approach where the actual Sanskrit mantras were accompanied in English.
