- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2025If you like Jackie Chan movies then this movie Panda plan is a great movie Jackie Chan knows how to add his unique blend of action and comedy to every movie he does. I love everything that Jackie Chan does so far and thanks to Amazon for having this in stock for me to buy a great price. It arrived on time in great condition.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2025While I do love Jackie Chan and adore his older action films, I have to admit that his more recent movies from the last decade haven't exactly been the best. I understand that he's getting old and can't do what he used to do, but still... His more recent films, while not great, have usually been very entertaining and enjoyable if nothing else. Films like "Vanguard"(2020) "Bleeding Steel"(2017) and "The Iron Mask"(2019) are perfect examples of movies of his that are technically "Bad" but still pretty enjoyable to watch, whether that be for the action, fun characters, or nice production values. Also one of his most recent films he did on Netflix, "Hidden Strike"(2023) was actually genuinely good and felt like a nice throwback to his classic films from the 90s. With all of this in mind, I actually had pretty decent hopes that this movie "Panda Plan" would be very enjoyable. Well long story short, it's pretty forgettable. It's very silly and feels more like a low-effort kids movie than anything else. Normally I wouldn't mind that, I mean Jackie Chan has made enjoyable "Kids" movies in the past such as "Around the world in 80 days", but that movie at least had decent production values and creative scenarios. This movie, while not low budget per say, definitely feels like more of a "straight to video film" type of film compared to a lot of his other works. And the story essentially just feels like a kid-friendly version of "Die-Hard" but with a badly rendered CGI panda that Jackie has to rescue and look after throughout the film. Regarding the story, Jackie Chan essentially plays an exaggerated version of his real life self who has to stop a group of mercenaries from kidnapping a baby panda from a Chinese nature reserve. Like I said, it's very goofy and the whole thing feels like it was aimed more at a young kid audience. Jackie Chan, to his credit, does still try to have some decent stunts and action sequences here and there and I will say that there are some fairly funny slapstick moments when he's fighting the mercenaries. Also, the opening fight scene is genuinely great with some good "Wire Foo" style action, but it's very short and doesn't really play into the movie's story much. Jackie Chan does have some decent stunts all throughout the movie but not a lot of it is too memorable. You can tell he is still trying though, even in his older years with these films, so I still respect him for that. The big problem with this movie's action though, is that it's mostly just played for laughs and is so silly that you never really feel any tension or suspense for the action taking place and the fighting in general seems way less impactful compared to his other films. The Panda he has to rescue is obviously not real and completely computer generated and I'm not complaining. I understand that the filmmakers obviously couldn't use a real endangered animal like a panda to shoot an action movie but it still ultimately hurts the movie with just how fake the baby panda actually looks. I think it would have helped a little if they perhaps used an animatronic puppet for some shots or even just a simple plush doll for scenes where they are just running around with the panda in their arms. As it is, the panda never really looks like it's actually in the same shot as the other actors and it's always apparent that the actors are just grabbing and reacting to thin air. That's actually one aspect where the movie really ends up feeling cheap. It's not just the panda either; the movie takes place on a huge nature reserve and almost all of the animals that we see in this reserve are completely CGI and fake looking. You would think that Jackie Chan of all people would have enough clout in a Chinese production to have the crew be able to film at least some real animals, but that's sadly not the case. The worst case of this is in a scene where Jackie Chan has to steal some milk from a lactating mother Rhino in order to feed the baby panda he has(don't ask, it makes sense in the movie, just trust me) and we are treated to some CGI that looks like it came right out of the early 2000s. Beyond all of that, the movie's English dub is pretty terrible and almost all of the dialogue is laughably bad, though the DVD also come with the original language that they filmed the movie in with English subtitles for those interested. Between the not so impactful action, the uninspired story, the bad CGI animals, and terrible English dub; it all adds up to a pretty bad action film. I can't really recommend this unless your a real die hard Jackie Chan fan like I am. It's not his worst movie and is still way better than that film "the Tuxedo" that he did way back in 2002 with Jennifer love Hewitt. It does have some funny moments here and there but it just doesn't live up to the entertainment value that most of his films are known for.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2025Not the best Jackie Chan movie but enjoyable. Lots of cute scenes. The fighting scenes were ok but nothing like I expected like past movies. I would recommend watching it and I don’t regret renting it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025Not the best Jackie Chan movie. He’s getting a little too old to do all this he does but the panda story was great.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025This is a Jackie Chan movie with a heavy dose of government input, as seen in the credits at the beginning. It was not bad for a child's movie.
