Understand History's Most Enigmatic Serial Killer
In December of 1968, a serial killer began orchestrating a campaign of terror in the San Francisco Bay Area. Not satisfied with the simple act of murder, he taunted law enforcement and the public by writing letters to local newspapers. Through often cryptic and bizarre content--including four ciphers, three (now two) of which have never been solved--the psychopath played a twisted game. Reporters dubbed the man the "Cipher Killer," but the murderer chose a different name for himself: the Zodiac. Eventually, he would claim to have murdered thirty-seven. Law enforcement, however, could only account for five.
In 1971, authenticated communications with the Zodiac ceased. The elusive fugitive resurfaced briefly three years later, sending a small number of communiqués, before disappearing for good. What started out with shocking abruptness slowly dissolved into mysterious uncertainty. To this day, the Zodiac's true identity remains one of the twentieth century's greatest mysteries...
In Volume 1 of The Zodiac Revisited, Michael reviews the facts of the case, building a foundation for the analysis that follows in Volumes 2 and 3.
Having established an analytical foundation in Volume 1, Michael uses Volume 2 to look across the entirety of the case and identify meaningful threads of commonality, exploring subjects such as the killer's methodology, persona, and ciphers.
In the final volume of The Zodiac Revisited, Michael uses the insights developed in Volume 2 to reexamine the killer's letters and crimes as well as the possibility that the killer committed a series of murders in Southern California.

The Zodiac Revisited, Volume 1: The Facts of the Case
It's impossible to analyze the case of the Zodiac without understanding exactly what happened. Yet, explaining what happened while simultaneously attempting to analyze it all is a recipe for confusion. To address this problem, The Zodiac Revisited starts with Volume 1, which objectively reviews what happened in the case of the Zodiac, without the distraction of analysis. This approach allows for a very straightforward telling of events. The reader experiences the case of the Zodiac much the same way that the San Francisco Bay Area public experienced it during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Zodiac Revisited, Volume 2: Analysis and Fact-Based Speculation
With the analytical foundation established, Volume 2 takes up the task of broadly analyzing the case. This is done by establishing some context, making some general observations across the entirety of the evidence, and then tackling four key subjects: the killer’s use of a "methodology," the construction of the Zodiac persona, the killer’s use of cipher, and, finally, the Zodiac's obsession with threatening a school bus. There is much to unwrap in each of these subjects, and by the time a reader finishes Volume 2, he or she should have a thorough understanding of the Zodiac and several of his behaviors.

The Zodiac Revisited, Volume 3: Tying It All Together
With the key elements of the killer’s behavior understood, Volume 3 seeks to re-explore the evidence in light of these newly developed understandings. In particular, Cole re-examines the question of whether or not the killer was responsible for a string of murders in Southern California prior to the emergence of the Zodiac persona in the Bay Area. He then revisits the relevant parts of all the killer’s writings and his crimes. In each case, the understandings developed in Volume 2 provide significant insights into the material. To further make sense of the killer, during the review of the crimes Cole provides a Speculative Evolution section where he suggests a possible chain of events that could explain the facts as we know them. Again, the insights developed in Volume 2 allow us to glean much additional information from the killer’s written words and his actions. Upon reaching the end of Volume 3, the reader will have a thorough understanding of history's most enigmatic serial killer.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I have completed the first two volumes of this 3-volume work. The author conducts his analysis of the puzzling case in a logical, analytical method. He does not make any unreasonable assumptions and just follows the facts where they take him. He also does not sensationalize anything in the story. I am looking forward to moving to volume three.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2023This second book in the three-part series about the Zodiac Killer, has a more analytic approach. Michael Cole in the first book laid out the facts about each of the attacks, but here we have his take on the events and a very deep look at the ciphers.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2023I intended to give the books a four and noticed later I had hit a 3. Sorry my bad. Also, I wonder if the author took the Phillips 66 map to the summit of Mt Diablo on a clear day. The view is the second most expansive on earth. From one place you can probably see nearly all the locations or nearby of most of Zodiacs Bay Area crimes (including Kathleen Johns).
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2023This was not the book for me. I skipped through most of it. I’m simply not all that interested in ciphers & all that jazz, particularly since little was done to suggest possible suspects. But then again, the subject intrigued so many, that may have been impossible.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2022Mr Cole does it again. A very rational and logical exploration of The Zodiac crime spree. This one involving the killer's use of cyphers.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021Generally good; however, the text on the ciphers was too technical for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021Volume 2 gets into more of the methodology of the case. Not only in how the Zodiac went about his crimes and taunting the police and media but also in how the reader can understand and analyze the clues and ciphers and come to a stronger conclusion regarding motive etc. It goes into depth regarding cryptography, celestial navigation, the murders' relation to bodies of water, equinoxes and solstices, plus zodiac vs astrology. Also, the obsession with the bombing of school buses and which cases most likely fall under the Zodiac killer and the ones that do not. In different hands, the material might be dry or even boring. Cole does a great job of simply explaining a complex subject, as well as justifying the need to go into such detail. His critiques of other theories are to the point and without ad hominem attacks. I felt like I had a greater understanding of many aspects of the case than ever before. I had to read over certain parts twice but it was well worth the time. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021The author takes all the facts in hand and crawls inside the head of the Zodiac. How much is spot on and how much misses the mark is open to debate. However, the depth of thought behind why Zodiac did everything from location selection to victim profiles and ciphers to spelling errors is amazing.
If you want in depth and ground level on the case, this is required reading. I strongly recommend reading the trilogy in order...

5.0 out of 5 stars This may be the best contribution to the case in many years
This is my favourite of Cole's three books and, in my opinion, a substantial contribution to the case. It is incredibly refreshing to see arguments presented logically and rationally for once without the biases of a favoured suspect. Cole's proposed solutions to the cyphers are argued very sensibly. This is a must read for anyone who is genuinely interested in the Zodiac case.
