There’s a boat on the water sailing gently out to see There’s a feeling I get when your eyes look at me There’s a stillness out there somewhere, look beyond the waves There’s a place in time you’ll find how many souls you saved Infinity Blue Infinity Blue Infinity Blue Infinity Blue There’s a tide that flows between the stranded and the free Theres a boat on the water sailing gently out to sea There’s a thought that sails around the surface of my mind There’s an answer floating just beneath the waterline Infinity blue Infinity blue Infinity blue Infinity blue

We must have walked a thousand miles or more Leaving footprints in the sand We laid our history out along the shore Where the water meets the land And our story unfolds as we head to the waterline Watch the lone majestic black winged gull Lord of all that he surveys See the perfect outline of his sole Melt beneath that seventh wave And our story unfolds as we head to the waterline And our history flows when we walk along the waterline The pull of the open sea The quest for the only key The shipwrecks that failed to see The warning signs below the water line Watching boats sail into harbour See what the graving dock will find Out of reach below the water Out of sight and out of mind And they’re sailing to fail living life above the waterline And our story unfolds as we head to the waterline And our history flows like a river in flood Like our hearts pumping blood Watching Mercury rise Through the numbers to the waterline line

Tied 06:18 video
****** TIED He took his chances and sailed across his black sea Beneath the water lay relics from another time While he reflected on the signs he knew he should’ve seen He trimmed the sails and took the baring of another line The time had come to ditch the plans he’s been devising A fading horizon and the bitter sails of promise torn The fact remained he knew that seven seas were rising To get back home there’s be no port in any storm Tied to the mast by his own admission to the sea he’s sailing on Tied by the ropes of his own conviction in the grip of the sirens’ song She couldn’t reach him, just memories flowing through her Into her heart like arrows shot from every vein Tied to his past and tied to his future He couldn’t find the right way to break out of the pain Tied to the mast by his own admission to the sea he’s sailing on Tied by the ropes of his own conviction in the grip of the sirens’ song And he lifted his eyes to the night sky And traced the lines of the constellations From the North Star to the Sword of Orion He could see his life in the points of connection The enemies of promise, the waves of regret The fading horizons, ambitions unmet The measure of success, the comparisons of love The connections so clear in the lines above He closed his eyes to the daylight To break the tie of the lone star shining That one star that could take him to the answer To break the cycle like the stars unwinding The enemies of promise, the waves of regret The fading horizons, ambitions unmet The measure of success, the comparisons of love The connections so clear in the lines above

****************************** ON BROTHERS WATER On the west side of the lake North end of the pass As the day began to break Reflecting sun on glass I could feel it in the air By the waterside Only ever half aware Of where the story lies On Brothers Water On Brothers Water So we walked along the shore And let our thoughts unwind Whether legend myth or lore There’s always something left behind On Brothers Water On Brothers Water A dark December Day Two Brothers on their way To friends on the other side All fears were cast aside The ice thick on Broad Water Like lambs before the slaughter The sun and lake conspire Fulfilling hell’s desire On Brothers Water On Brothers Water
5.
*************************************** THE MYTH OF UNCERTAINTY Let your story take another turn, let the road wind Let the furnace of ambition burn in your own mind When you’re divided, torn between the two you thought you'd really need Undecided, hung between the devil and the deep blue sea The myth of uncertainty will rise Take the narrative you listen to down a new road See the structure of your history as the dead load Find the detail, read between the lines see the truth unfold Let yourself fail, don’t let your fears be your truth untold Locked in your memory’s hold Inside I stood corrected, listened and accepted every word you gave Felt connected, loosening the grip on all the ego craved And every mistake I made Untied While internal conversations flow like an endless road Feeling like I could just let them go like a broken code
6.
****************************** Cathedral bells still ring And lighthouse sirens sing to me Along the river and the road It’s how my memories sound The spirit of two north east towns carry me Between the river and the road From Bow Banks to Whitburn Steel The soundwaves of my life reveal I’m the thread and you’re the spinning wheel And though you set me free I could never let you go Southbound on the Durham Road I found a way to crack the code, my memories Just like a river flowed Locked in my history Like rocks beneath an open sea they stay with me With every step along the road From Bow Banks to Whitburn Steel The soundwaves of my life reveal I’m the line and you’re the fishing reel And though you set me free I could never let you go Shaped by the power of Bishops and Saints And the might of the souls they swayed Built by the bones and the blood in the veins And the light of the lives that fade I’d hear it in the thunderous drag of the chains On the slipways of the ships we made They would sail to sea The way you set me free But I could never let you go From The Bailey to The North Sands Quay Flow the waters of my destiny Like every boat we launched into the sea You would set me free, but I could never let you go

Over the hill, washed up and put out to dry A cast iron will would put me here ‘til the day I die And my heart is still moving in for the kill Dusted and done Too many cuts too many scars Under the gun On my back but I still see the stars And my heart is still while they’re moving in for the kill Breaks in the code, forks in the road and I Missed all the vital signs Safe in the net from the jaws of regret and The blood that I’ve let from the throats that have got me here They clamour so loud, I struggle to hear a thing they say Savagely proud, yes, I remember myself that way With a void to fill, moving in for the kill Breaks in the code, forks in the road and I Missed all the vital signs Safe in the net from the jaws of regret and The blood that I let from the throats that have got me here Got me here Got Me here Got me here
8.
We walk in time from Queens Parade The clocks unwind while memories fade The North East wind blows through our bones Through my veins the North Sea flows Our time will come our time will go You take me down to meet the tide On the seventh wave our hopes will ride The water flows through the rocks and stones Our history flows through our hearts and bones The tide will come the tide will go We’ll ride the wave that takes us in We’ll ride the wave that takes us in The North East wind blows through our bones Through my veins the North Sea flows We’ll ride the wave that takes us in We’ll ride the wave that tales us in We’re on the wave that takes us in

Still 05:24
**************************************** See the Wolf Moon casting light Like a warning shot across our bow Taking time and stealing tide By the Snow Moon we’ll have run aground Still we just sail on to the storm It weighs on our minds, eyes open wide In the grip of its teeth we know we’ll be torn By the force of the wave we ride Still we just sail on Still we just sail on Strawberry moon riding high On our hopes that the wind will change We’re beneath a forbidding sky Constant bearing decreasing range Still we just sail on through the storm Dragging anchor our fears descend She's is in irons, it rages on We’re paid out to the bitter end Still we just sail on Still we just sail on His faith in his captain was now all but dead The Bosun's eyes fixed on the tempest ahead “I'll save every man if this ship is my last Take in the top sail strike down the mast We would've had time we knew of the danger But you sailed us blind to irreverent failure We were tied to your faith in the face of the warned Held by the course to the mouth of the storm” Harvest moon rising slow Quarterdecks are in disarray Summer sun sinking low One mistake there’ll be hell to pay Still we just sail on through the storm, The wind and the water flow Come the Cold Moon we’ll be worn To the bone in the water below Still we just sail on (Still we just sail on) Still we just sail on (Still we just sail on) Still we just sail on (Still we just sail on) Still we just sail on (Still we just sail on) Still

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WIDOWS & BAIRNS The north water was calm but the weather glass low They’d not sailed for a week and felt sure they should go After all that was said There were mouths to be fed The Kingfisher warned there’d trouble ahead Desperation turned blind eyes to all that he said Risk was part of their work No thanks to the Kirk Though their fighting was done Their war was yet to be won As it came in from the West it fell black as the night The shear might of the storm turning blue into white They would fight their way home Or be sunk like a stone Close to two hundred men Leaving widows and bairns

************************************************* I watched them all their faces cracking Like a cannon ball you’d knock them to the ground And they’d always tell me what a genius you are Like nectar to a bee I just hope that I was there Somewhere in the best of your days I see them all in every picture You look so small but you’re the biggest to me So many faces but it always comes to you A moth to the flame I just hope that I was there Somewhere in the best of your days I just hope that I was there Somewhere in the best of your days

about

The Waterline is my first solo album. After releasing four albums with Freedom To Glide I've experienced a completely different journey creating this album. Musically, it's the culmination of the vast array of artists I've been inspired by in my life as a musician. So there are elements of rock, pop, jazz, folk, country, prog, classical and I'm sure a fair few other less obvious genres.

The analogies to do with the ocean seem endless to me and when I reflect on my song-writing on the four albums of Freedom To Glide it’s clear how often I’ve referred to the sea, sailing, waves, the horizon, icebergs etc. Maybe it’s just in my blood. I grew up in a coastal town, Sunderland. My Grandad was a fisherman and the sea has always been a part of my life I’d always taken for granted. That was made clear when I met my wife Ali who grew up in Coventry, she adores the sea and will make a bee-line for it in any weather! Trust me, ANY weather! I adore her so I always go of course.

Infinity Blue is the ocean. Imagine that ocean is life. The waterline of a boat is an often used analogy in psychology. Most of the everyday activity aboard a boat occurs above the waterline yet what happens below is mission-critical so it has to be kept in good shape. We're all just boats on the water.
