Major change to Patreon Platform... Again

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, Patreon has again announced the elimination of "per-creation billing" after November 2026 due to forced changed by Apple. You can read the announcement here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/148395613

Patreon announced this previous forced change by Apple here, then walked it back here.

AniDB currently uses a "per-creation billing" model. This is how we are able to control when we make paid Patreon posts, and collect your pledges. This control allowed AniDB to minimize the collection of excess funds beyond what we need to operate the site.

Patreon is again making this change because they have been forced to do so by Apple. Apple's app store no longer supports Patreon's per-creation billing model. In order for Patreon to comply and remain on the Apple App Store, they must migrate all creators to a Subscription model.

As a result of this change from Patreon, AniDB will be migrating to a subscription model in mid-2026. The November 2025 banner contest and paid post will likely be the last one under the current "per-creation billing" model.

We are currently assessing the impact of this change to AniDB, and what this means for everyone that supports us. Most likely, the following will happen:
  1. We move to a monthly subscription model as required by Patreon
  2. Everyone adjusts their Patreon pledges to a smaller amount to account for monthly billing
  3. Patreon also offers the option of annual subscription -- we are reviewing this feature
  4. If AniDB accumulates more money than we need, we will use Patreon's "pause monthly billing" feature to pause billings for 1 month at a time: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/214013323-How-to-pause-billing-for-your-members
  5. We keep pausing each month, as needed, until we burn off our surplus funds

Based on our current hosting costs, we need approximately $3,150 USD per year ($262 USD per month) to keep the lights on.

Last time we ran a poll, none of AniDB's supporters use the iOS app. Unfortunately, there is no opt-out despite this.

We will post more details and plans as information is available. Until then, please keep following this thread.

Please keep all discussion regarding this matter on the AniDB Forum in this thread.

A jacket typically has sleeves, and fastens in the front or slightly on the side. A jacket is generally lighter, tighter-fitting, and less insulating than a coat, which is exclusively outerwear. This hair length is longer than what one would typically, though not always, see on most males. Short hair includes hair that goes no more than a centimetre or two beyond the chin; anything longer is shoulder-length. Typical male hair at the back of the head which reaches the shoulders does not count as shoulder-length hair; the individual hair strands are very short (0-4 cm), and therefore count as short hair., skirtA skirt is a tube- or cone-shaped piece of clothing that hangs from the waist and covers the legs partially or fully. Skirts are often seen as garments for women, but exceptions exist. In anime, they`re almost always worn by women, generally as school uniform or workplace garments, and a man with one will likely be cross-dressing. Skirts that go below the knee are usually associated with strict rules and at times with winter, though even in winter anime schoolgirls in miniskirts can be found., thighhighsThighhighs or stockings are a close-fitting, variously elastic hosiery piece that fully cover and extend above the knees, or partly cover the knees, leaving only the thigh area exposed. Generally, "thighhighs" refers to stockings that stay up by the use of built-in elastic. In contrast, "stockings" is the general term and/or refers to the kind of stockings that need a suspender belt / garter belt. Hosiery that rise up to, but not including, the knee, or slightly thereunder, are knee highs., yellow hairThe character has yellow hair. This does not map precisely to real-life blond hair., zettai ryouikiZettai ryouiki, literally "absolute territory", is an area of exposed skin of a female in the gap between thigh-high or over-the-knee hosiery and a miniskirt, shorts, or on occasion a minidress. In addition to the area itself, the term can describe the clothing combination. Please note that zettai ryouiki requires all three components: over-the-knee or thigh-high hosiery, thigh skin, and one of skirt, shorts, or minidress.
