Overcast, I wait for rain to pour down and wash this day away.
The storm blows through, I lose my grip, my tears turn to mist.
Under you, a sleepless night, I awoke and you were out of sight.
Stars, they lead me back to you, I’m drowning in the blue, you hadn’t have a clue.
Longing for the feeling, close my eyes I’m dreaming of you.
How I wish you’d turn around, and listen to the sound, I’m calling to you.
In the wings, I’d fly to you, but your gaze has cast too far away.
I have prayed with all my might, afraid to say outright, I’m just an oversight.
About a month after releasing my debut album Searchin’, a musician friend asked me, “Anthony, are you ready for your next record?” The question felt like the equivalent of asking if I was ready to run another marathon, as I’m crossing the finish line on the last. I answered, “At this point I don’t think there will be another record!” This was May 2024. Unknowingly at the time just a few weeks later I had already composed what would become the first song of City Lights. Very quickly, I caught the creative bug yet again and began writing. A few months later I knew with certainty that I’d be recording another album.
Swiftly I set a plan in motion for May 2025. I booked three consecutive concerts in Southern Ontario, and then a recording session on the fourth day. I asked some of my favourite musicians in the world to join me. Summer Camargo, the youngest ever member of the famed Saturday Night Live band, flew in from New York City for the concerts and session. Jacob Chung, a ‘young lion’ tenor saxophonist in New York, and an old friend from our University of Toronto days, also flew in for the dates. And I used my working trio of Ernesto Cervini and Jonathan Chapman to fill out the rhythm section. I also featured one of my closest musical collaborators, Jennarie, to sing Oversight which we co-wrote together.
Unlike Searchin’, which is more of a collection of my ‘greatest hits’, I wrote City Lights as a suite of music, trying to achieve a cohesive sound across the record. The original tunes on the album are inspired by experiences I’ve had in various cities I’ve visited, but most notably Toronto and New York.
To be a professional jazz pianist in 2025 is no easy task. Its unorthodoxy as a career choice is not lost on me. I’ve had many ups and downs over the past decade of playing music professionally, but I know with certainty that the people I’m surrounded by are the reason I do what I do today. First and foremost, I must thank my parents, Lucia and Lorenzo, who enrolled me in piano lessons at the age of four, and have never stopped encouraging me since. I must thank my brother Laurence who has been in my corner since day one. I’d like to thank my band for bringing their creativity, skill, love, expertise, and good vibes to this album. I’d also like to thank my friends Jackson Welchner and Jennarie who helped me tremendously behind the scenes to make sure the music sounded and was promoted as well as possible.
Most of all, I thank you, the listener, for checking out this album and supporting my career. Every single fan who buys a CD, streams my music, comes to a live show, or supports me online means the world, and without you, none of this would be possible. Please enjoy City Lights!
