PHLIPPINES – LG Electronics welcomed the new year by being the highlight of the world’s premier consumer electronics show, CES.
“Is technology making your life better?” LG Electronics president and CTO Dr. I.P. Park asked the audience at the beginning of his keynote speech.
Dr. Park outlined the company’s vision for the future in his keynote entitled “AI for an Even Better Life” on January 7, 2019 at the MGM Park Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Dr. Park outlined how the three key pillars of artificial intelligence – Evolve, Connect and Open – could deliver a robust AI ecosystem with diverse solutions for the real world.
Dr. Park presented LG’s latest innovations in these appliances which leveraged the power of AI: the world’s most advanced AI chip for home appliances, a washing machine with reinforced learning, and “self-healing” machines that can detect and fix malfunctions automatically without interrupting operation.
“Our ambition is to go way beyond LG’s current role as a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics and to become a lifestyle innovator that serves a truly intelligent way of living,” Dr. Park continued.
Dr. Park highlighted the importance of evolving intelligence in consumer electronics and LG’s effort in extending its unparalleled consumer insight from home to the road with its innovative offerings for a new in-car experience. He then presented LG’s ambition to unlock the potential of AI technology a much larger scale by connecting hitherto individual units into intelligent systems.
LG’s Robot Service Delivery Platform (RSDP) will systematically coordinate what multiple robots see, hear and learn to transform how we manage our work and our environment. AI-based smart grid will allow us to radically improve the efficiency of our energy ecosystem, from production and storage to consumption. Intelligent signage will turn the physical elements of space such as walls, signboards and even floors, into an active, intelligent part of environment.
“LG is a global powerhouse at the forefront of the AI revolution, which will impact nearly every major industry from technology to healthcare, agriculture, transportation, engineering and beyond,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA. “We were thrilled to have LG talk about ‘AI for an Even Better Life’ as its first keynote in CES history.”
Working together for a smarter future
This year, LG and Microsoft entered into a memorandum of understanding to further enhance LG’s autonomous vehicle and infotainment system business.
With this new partnership, LG will accelerate the transformation of its existing digital platform for the vehicle industry, seen as key growth engines for the company, by leveraging Microsoft’s Azure cloud and artificial intelligence technologies along with LG’s future self-driving software. LG will apply Microsoft’s AI knowhow to its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Driver-Status Monitoring Camera (DSM) and Multi-Purpose Front Camera products and incorporate Microsoft’s Virtual Assistant Solution Accelerator in LG’s infotainment systems.
“Our expectation is that the combination of Microsoft’s advanced cloud infrastructure with LG’s fast-growing automotive components business will accelerate the self-driving auto industry as a whole… We’re confident that the combination of Microsoft and LG technologies will create a new benchmark in autonomous auto AI,” said Kim Jin-yong, president of LG’s Vehicle Component Solutions Company.
“Together LG and Microsoft can help shape the future of transportation… Working together, we can empower automakers to deliver differentiated mobility experiences, create new services and revenue opportunities, and to build safer, more intelligent and more sustainable vehicles,” said Sanjay Ravi, general manager, automotive industry at Microsoft.
