This is an instance of multitask learning, where individual tasks (language pairs) benefit from sharing knowledge with related tasks. We focus on transliteration involving related tasks i.e., languages sharing writing systems and phonetic properties ( orthographically similar languages). We propose a modified neural encoder-decoder model that maximizes parameter sharing across language pairs in order to effectively leverage orthographic similarity. We show that multilingual transliteration significantly outperforms bilingual transliteration in different scenarios (average increase of 58% across a variety of languages we experimented with). We also show that multilingual transliteration models can generalize well to languages\/language pairs not encountered during training and hence perform well on the zeroshot transliteration task. We show that further improvements can be achieved by using phonetic feature input. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1162\/tacl_a_00022","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,12,10]],"date-time":"2018-12-10T19:32:50Z","timestamp":1544470370000},"page":"303-316","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":15,"title":["Leveraging Orthographic Similarity for Multilingual Neural Transliteration"],"prefix":"10.1162","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Anoop","family":"Kunchukuttan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Mitesh","family":"Khapra","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Gurneet","family":"Singh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Pushpak","family":"Bhattacharyya","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India."}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"281","reference":[{"key":"p_16","author":"Johnson Melvin","year":"2017","journal-title":"Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics."},{"key":"p_26","author":"Lee Jason","year":"2017","journal-title":"Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics."},{"key":"p_32","author":"Srivastava Nitish","year":"2014","journal-title":"The Journal of Machine Learning Research."},{"key":"p_35","author":"van der Maaten Laurens","year":"2008","journal-title":"Journal of Machine Learning Research."}],"container-title":["Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.mitpressjournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1162\/tacl_a_00022","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,12]],"date-time":"2021-03-12T21:37:56Z","timestamp":1615585076000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/direct.mit.edu\/tacl\/article\/43438"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2018,12]]},"references-count":4,"alternative-id":["10.1162\/tacl_a_00022"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/tacl_a_00022","relation":{},"ISSN":["2307-387X"],"issn-type":[{"value":"2307-387X","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2018,12]]}}}
